Removal & Installation



2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft sealing surface.



    Transaxle
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal using a prytool
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal using tool J 42067
     
    Flywheel. Tighten the flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm) plus an additional 25 degrees.
     
    Transaxle
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.

3.1L & 3.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft sealing surface.



    Transaxle
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal using a prytool
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the seal and bore with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the new seal by sliding it over the mandrel of rear main seal installer tool J 34686 until the dust lip bottoms squarely against the tool collar.
  4.  
  5. Align the dowel pin of the tool with the dowel pin hole in the crankshaft and attach the tool to the crankshaft. Tighten the attaching screws to 24-60 inch lbs. (2.7-6.8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the tool T-handle to press the seal into the bore until the tool collar is flush against the engine.
  8.  
  9. Remove the installation tool.
    NOTE
    Make sure that the seal is squarely seated in the bore.

  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel. Tighten the flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
     
    Transaxle
     

  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.
