Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Clutch slave cylinder line and bracket
     
    Shifter cables from the transaxle
     
    Cable bracket
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector
     
    Backup lamp switch electrical connector
     
    Starter motor
     

  4.  
  5. Tie the radiator to the upper hood latch panel.
  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle bolts
     
    Lower closeout panel
     
    Wheels
     
    Both wheel well splash shields
     
    Lower radiator support
     
    Wheel Speed sensor (WSS) electrical connectors
     
    Both outer tie rod ends
     
    Both ball joints
     
    Both stabilizer shaft links
     
    Front transaxle mount bolts
     
    Side transaxle mount nuts
     
    Rear transaxle mount stud
     
    Right brake hose
     

  10.  
  11. Support the suspension crossmember.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Suspension crossmember bolts
     
    Rack and pinion bolts
     

  14.  
  15. Raise the vehicle off of the front suspension crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front transaxle mount
     
    Rear transaxle mount
     
    Halfshafts from the vehicle
     

  18.  
  19. Lower the engine and transaxle assembly enough to clear the left side inner body panel.
  20.  
  21. Support and remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Torque the bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Rear transaxle mount
     
    Front transaxle mount
     
    Rear transaxle mount bolt. Torque the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
     
    Front transaxle mount bolts. Torque the bolts to 84 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Rack and pinion bolts. Torque the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
     
    Suspension crossmember bolts. Torque the rear bolts to 180 ft. lbs. (245 Nm) and the front bolts to 84 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Right front brake hose
     
    Both stabilizer shaft links. Torque the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Both outer tie rod ends. Torque the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus an additional 180 degree turn.
     
    Both ball joints. Torque the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    WSS electrical connectors
     
    Lower radiator support
     
    Both wheel well splash shields
     
    Front wheels
     
    Lower closeout panel
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the engine support fixture.
  4.  
  5. Untie the radiator support.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) on 2.2L engines, to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) on 2.4L engines, 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) on 3.1L engines, and 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) on 3.4L engines.
     
    Backup lamp switch electrical connector
     
    VSS electrical connector
     
    Shifter cables
     
    Clutch slave cylinder bracket and line
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
