2.4L Engine



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety purposes.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, detach the Variable Effort Steering (VES) electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the pressure and return lines from the pump.
    NOTE
    Place a rag under the pressure tubes to contain any excess power steering fluid.

  6.  
  7. Remove the two bolts that secure the pump to the cylinder head
  8.  
  9. Remove the pump from the cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Install the pump into the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install the two pump-to-cylinder head retaining bolts, and tighten them to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the pressure and return lines to the power steering pump.
  6.  
  7. Engage the Variable Effort Steering (VES) electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Fill the power steering reservoir with the proper type of fluid.
  10.  
  11. Bleed the power steering system as necessary.
  12.  

3.1 Engine



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, detach the Variable Effort Steering (VES) electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the power steering pump-to-engine bolts.
  8.  
  9. Pull the pump forward, then disconnect and plug the pressure tubes.
    NOTE
    Place a rag under the pressure tubes to contain any excess power steering fluid.

  10.  
  11. On 3.1L engines, remove the engine mount, and remove the pump.
    NOTE
    To remove the engine mount, support the engine with a suitable jack by the oil pan. Also, use a thin piece of wood on the jack pad to prevent oil pan damage.

To install:

  1. On 3.1L engines, position the pump and install the engine mount. Tighten the engine support-to-mount bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm). Tighten the engine mount-to-body bolts to 49 ft. lbs. (66 Nm) and the nut to 31 ft. lbs. (31 Nm), and remove the jack from the oil pan.

  3. Unplug and connect the pressure tubes.
  4.  
  5. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, engage the (VES) electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with the proper type and amount of fluid.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.
  12.  

3.4L Engines



  1. Remove the upper engine mount.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the power steering hoses from the pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts (2).
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle (1).

To install:

  1. Install the power steering pump (1) to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the power steering pump mounting bolts (2). Tighten the power steering mounting bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering hoses to the pump.
  6.  
  7. Install the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper engine mount.
  10.  
  11. Fill the power steering pump with power steering fluid.
  12.  
  13. Bleed the power steering system.
  14.
