Brake Caliper

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Siphon 2 / 3 of the brake fluid out of the master cylinder.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Compress the caliper piston back into the caliper bore using a large pair of pliers, C-clamp or special piston retracting tool.

    Brake hose from the caliper and discard the copper washers. Plug the hose to prevent excessive fluid loss and possible fluid contamination.
     
    Caliper mounting bolts and the caliper from the knuckle
     
    Brake pads from the caliper, if the caliper is being replaced
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Inspect the condition of the caliper support for rust and corrosion that will hinder the travel of the caliper.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the caliper mounting hardware. New bolts are usually recommended.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the mounting bushings and sleeves with silicone grease as required.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Brake pads in the caliper
     
    Caliper on the steering knuckle
     
    Mounting bolts and torque to 40 ft. lbs. (51 Nm)
     
    Brake hose to the caliper using new copper washers and torque the mounting bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     

  8.  
  9. Refill the master cylinder and bleed the brake system.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Verify correct brake operation.
  14.
