Tie Rod Ends



Inner
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rack and pinion gear from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lock plate from the inner tie rod bolts. Discard the lock plate.
  6.  
  7. If removing both tie rods, remove both bolts, the bolt support plate and one of the tie rod assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the removed tie rod's bolt to keep inner parts of the rack aligned.
  10.  
  11. Remove the remaining tie rod.
  12.  
  13. If only removing one tie rod, slide the assembly out from between the support plate and the center housing cover washer.

To install:

  1. Install the center housing cover washer fitted into the rack and pinion boot.
  2.  
  3. Install the inner tie rod bolts through the holes in the bolt support plate, inner pivot bushing, center housing cover washer, rack housing and into the threaded holes.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install a new lock plate with its notches over the bolt flats.
  8.  
  9. Install the rack and pinion gear.
  10.  
  11. Fill the power steering pump with fluid and bleed the system.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and check the rack for proper operation and leaks.
  14.  

Outer
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cotter pin and the nut from the tie rod ball stud at the steering knuckle. Discard the cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the outer tie rod pinch bolts.
  6.  
  7. Using steering linkage puller J 24319-01 or equivalent, separate the tie rod taper from the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tie rod from the adjuster.

  11. Fasten the outer tie rod to the tie rod adjuster.
  12.  
  13. Connect the outer tie rod ball stud to the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Fasten the hex slotted nut to the tie rod ball stud. Tighten the nut to 35 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), with a maximum torque of 50 ft. lbs. (75 Nm), then install a new cotter pin.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the toe by turning the tie rod adjuster. Refer to the wheel alignment chart for specifications.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable, then have the front end alignment checked and adjusted as necessary.
