NOTE
This procedure requires the use of Steering Wheel Puller J 1859-A and Steering Wheel Puller Legs J 42120, or their equivalents.


CAUTION
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column shrouds/trim covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inflator module, as follows
    1. Rotate the steering wheel 1 / 2  turn in order to access the screws to the steering wheel inflator module at the back of the steering wheel.
    2.  
    3. Use a T30 TORX® in order to remove the inflator module screws.
    4.  
    5. Gently pull the inflator module from the steering wheel.
    6.  
    7. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the yellow SIR electrical connector.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the yellow SIR electrical connector from the steering wheel inflator module
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the horn ground lead from the steering wheel.
    12.  
    13. Rotate the horn contact lead counterclockwise 1 / 4  turn in order to remove the horn contact lead from the steering column shaft tower.
    14.  
    15. Remove the steering wheel inflator module.
    16.

  9. Remove the steering wheel nut (1).
    NOTE
    When removing the steering wheel with the specified steering wheel puller and steering wheel adapter legs, ensure that the left leg tab is down and the right leg tab is up. This will prevent the steering wheel and puller from binding and prevent damage to the steering columns integrity.

  11. Remove the steering wheel using the Steering Wheel Puller J 1859-A and Steering Wheel Puller Legs J 42120.

  13. Disconnect the electrical connectors (4) from the column.
  14.  
  15. Route the electrical connectors (4) through the steering wheel opening.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel (2) from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Route the electrical connectors (4) through the steering wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical connector (4) to the steering column (3).
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel on the steering column (3).
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel nut (1) on the steering column (3). Tighten the nut to 27-29 ft. lbs. (37-40 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the inflator module, as follows:
    NOTE
    Do not install the steering wheel inflator module to the steering wheel at this time.

    1. Use a T30 TORX® in order to install the screws to the steering wheel inflator module. Tighten the screws to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Rotate the steering wheel ½ turn in order to center the steering wheel.
    4.  
    5. Position the steering wheel inflator module to the steering wheel.
    6.  
    7. Rotate the horn contact lead (2) clockwise 1 / 4  turn in order to install the horn contact lead to the steering column shaft tower.
    8.  
    9. Connect the horn ground lead to the steering wheel.
    10.  
    11. Connect the yellow SIR electrical connector to the steering wheel inflator module.
    12.  
    13. Install the CPA to the yellow SIR electrical connector.
    14.  
    15. Important: Route the wiring harnesses correctly.
    16.  
    17. Align the inflator module screws with the openings on the steering wheel.
    18.  
    19. Install the inflator module to the steering wheel by firmly pressing into place until fully seated.
    20.  

  10.  
  11. Install the steering column shrouds/trim covers.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
