Removal & Installation



2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable
  4.  
  5. Remove engine undercover
  6.  
  7. A special tool is needed to remove the drive belt tensioner. To remove the tensioner:
    WARNING
    Do not loosen the belt tensioner pulley bolt or turn the tensioner counterclockwise. If the bolt is loosened, the tensioner assembly must be replaced.



    Working underneath the vehicle, place tool J-46535 on the tensioner idler pulley and push clockwise.
     



    Insert a short screwdriver into the tensioner retaining boss to lock the tensioner in place
     
    Remove the drive belt

  9. Unplug the connector from the alternator and disconnect the B+ cable.
  10.  
  11. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the alternator and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  2.  
  3. Connect the wiring. Tighten the B+ cable carefully.
  4.  
  5. Install the drive belt and hold the tensioner with the special tool to remove the screwdriver.
  6.  
  7. Install the engine undercover
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable
  10.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
  2.  
  3. Remove engine side undercover.
  4.  
  5. Remove drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove -B- terminal nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove air intake duct.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect alternator harness connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove alternator ground harness bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove alternator bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove alternator assembly upward.

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
    CAUTION
    Be sure to tighten -B- terminal nut carefully.

  3. Install alternator and check tension of belt.
    NOTE
    For this model, the power generation voltage variable control system that controls the power generation voltage of the alternator has been adopted. Therefore, the power generation voltage variable control system operation inspection should be performed after replacing the alternator, and then make sure that the system operates normally.

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008


NOTE
The A/C compressor must be removed to remove the alternator.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove engine room cover.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the right front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove front/right-side engine undercover.
  10.  
  11. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove battery tray.
  14.  
  15. Remove cooling fan assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the A/C compressor.

    Evacuate A/C system.
     
    Disconnect the high-pressure flexible hose and low-pressure flexible hose from the compressor. Cap or wrap the hoses and compressor openings with vinyl tape to entry of any contaminants or moisture.
     
    Disconnect the clamp and reposition the power steering pipe out of the way.
     
    Disconnect the compressor wiring.
     
    Remove the right hand compressor bolts.
     
    Remove the front compressor bolts and remove the compressor.

  21. Remove idler pulleys.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the oil pressure switch.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the alternator wiring.
  26.  
  27. Remove the bolt and nuts and slide the alternator out.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Fit the alternator into place and install the bolts. Torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the alternator wiring.
  4.  
  5. Connect the oil pressure switch.
  6.  
  7. Install idler pulleys.
  8.  
  9. Install the A/C compressor

    Install the compressor and torque the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Install new O-rings on the hoses and lubricate them with A/C oil.
     
    Connect the hoses

  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Install cooling fan assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install battery tray and battery.
  16.  
  17. Refill the cooling system and run the engine to check for leaks.
  18.  
  19. Recharge the A/C system and check for leaks.
  20.  
  21. Install remaining components.
  22.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
  2.  
  3. Partially drain engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove engine room cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove RH front wheel and tire assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove engine side undercover.
  10.  
  11. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove battery tray.
  14.  
  15. Remove cooling fan assembly.
  16.  
  17. Evacuate A/C system.
  18.  
  19. Remove drive belt.
  20.  
  21. Remove the A/C compressor.
  22.  
  23. Remove idler pulley.
  24.  
  25. Remove A/C idler pulley.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect oil pressure switch.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the alternator harness connectors.
  30.  
  31. Remove the alternator bolt and nuts.
  32.  
  33. Slide the alternator out and remove.

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
    CAUTION
    Be sure to tighten -B- terminal nut carefully.

  3. Install alternator and check tension of belt.

  7. Make sure that alternator pulley does not rattle.
  8.  
  9. Make sure that alternator pulley nut is tight. Tighten to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
