Adjustment



Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

The spring-loaded belt tensioner adjusts automatically as required.

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

Belt tension is not manually adjustable, it is automatically adjusted by the drive belt auto-tensioner. No adjustment is necessary. If the belt is out of adjustment, replace the accessory drive belt.

Inspection



Except Hybrid

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Check the drive belt auto-tensioner indicator when the engine is cold.
  2.  
  3. Make sure that the indicator (notch on fixed side) of drive belt auto-tensioner points to range A.
  4.  
  5. Visually check entire drive belt for wear, damage or cracks. If the indicator points outside of range A or the belt is cracked or damaged, replace drive belt.
  6.  
  7. When a new drive belt is installed, the indicator should point to range B.
  8.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Check that the indicator of drive belt auto-tensioner is within the possible use range.
    NOTE
    Check the drive belt auto-tensioner indication when the engine is cold.

  2.  
  3. When new drive belt is installed, the indicator should be within the new drive belt range.
  4.  
  5. Visually check entire drive belt for wear, damage or cracks.
  6.  
  7. If the indicator is out of the possible use range or belt is damaged, replace drive belt.
  8.  

Hybrid

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2010


CAUTION
Inspect the drive belt only when the Hybrid System is off.

  1. Make sure that the stamp mark of drive belt auto-tensioner is within the usable range.
  2.  
  3. Check the drive belt auto-tensioner indicator (notch) when the engine is cold.
  4.  
  5. When the new drive belt is installed, check that the belt is in range.
  6.  
  7. Visually check entire belt for wear, damage or cracks.
  8.  
  9. If the indicator is out of allowable use range or belt is damaged, replace the belt.
  10.  

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Working underneath the vehicle, place a wrench on the tensioner idler pulley nut.
  2.  
  3. Push the wrench clockwise and insert a short screwdriver in the hole that appears in the tensioner to hold it in place.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt
  6.  
  7. Install the new drive belt and hold the tensioner with the wrench to remove the screwdriver.
    WARNING
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt. (Do not turn it counterclockwise.) If turned counterclockwise, the complete auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including pulley.

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the fender protector side cover RH.
  2.  
  3. Securely hold the hexagonal part in pulley center of drive belt auto-tensioner, move in the direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner) using Tool J-46535.
    WARNING
    Avoid placing hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.


    CAUTION
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt. (Do not turn it counterclockwise.) If turned counterclockwise, the complete auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including pulley.

  5. Insert a rod approximately 0.24 inches (6 mm) in diameter through the rear of tensioner into retaining boss to lock tensioner pulley.
  6.  
  7. Leave tensioner pulley arm locked until drive belt is installed again.
  8.  
  9. Loosen drive belt from water pump pulley and then remove it from the other pulleys.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the drive belt onto all of the pulleys except for the water pump pulley. Then install the drive belt onto water pump pulley last.
    CAUTION
    Confirm belts are completely set on the pulleys.

  2.  
  3. Release tensioner, and apply tension to drive belt.
    WARNING
    Avoid placing hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.


    CAUTION
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt. Don't turn it counterclockwise. If turned counterclockwise, the complete auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including pulley.

  4.  
  5. Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise several times to equalize tension between each pulley.
  6.  
  7. Confirm tension of drive belt at indicator is within the allowable use range.
  8.  

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the front RH wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front RH side cover.
  4.  
  5. While securely holding the hexagonal part in pulley center of drive belt auto-tensioner, move in the direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner) using suitable tool.
    WARNING
    Avoid placing hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.


    CAUTION
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt. (Do not turn it counterclockwise.) If turned counterclockwise, the complete auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including pulley.

  6.
