2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Put the camshaft on a V-block supporting the No.2 and No.5 journals.
  2.  
  3. Set the dial gauge vertically on the No.3 bearing journal.
  4.  
  5. Turn camshaft in one direction by hand, and measure the runout on the dial gauge total indicator reading. Total camshaft runout must be no more than 0.0016 in. (0.04 mm).
  6.  
  7. Use a micrometer to measure cam lobe height. If wear is beyond the limit, replace the camshaft.

    Standard intake cam lobe height: 1.7644-1.7718 in. (44.815-45.005 mm)
     
    Standard exhaust cam lobe height: 1.7313-1.7388 in. (43.975-44.165 mm)

  9. Use a micrometer to measure the camshaft bearing journal.

    Standard No.1 bearing journal diameter: 1.0998-1.1006 in. (27.935-27.955 mm)
     
    Standard No. 2, 3, 4, 5 bearing journal diameter: 0.9226-0.9234 in. (23.435-23.455 mm)

  11. Install the camshaft brackets (bearing caps) and torque the bolts following the standard camshaft installation procedure. See Camshaft Removal and Installation.
  12.  
  13. Using an inside micrometer, measure the inner diameter of the camshaft bearings.

    Standard No.1 inner diameter: 1.1024-1.1032 in. (28.000-28.021 mm)
     
    Standard No. 2, 3, 4, 5 inner diameter: 0.9252-0.9260 in. (23.500-23.521 mm)

  15. To calculate camshaft journal oil clearance, subtract the outer diameter of the camshaft journal (outside micrometer reading) from the inner diameter of the camshaft bearings (inside micrometer reading). The standard clearance is 0.0018-0.0034 in. (0.045-0.086 mm)

  17. If clearance is out of the specified range, replace either or both the camshaft and the cylinder head assembly.
    NOTE
    Inner diameter of the camshaft bearings is manufactured together with the cylinder head. If the camshaft oil clearance is out of specification, replace the whole cylinder head assembly.

  19. To measure camshaft end play:

    Install the camshafts with the valve lifters removed and torque the bearing cap bolts as specified.
     
    Set a dial gauge in the thrust direction on the front end of the camshaft.
     
    Measure the end play with the dial gauge while moving the camshaft lengthwise in the bearings.
     
    If end play exceeds 0.0045-0.0074 in. (0.115-0.188 mm), install a new camshaft and measure again. If end play is still excessive, replace the cylinder head.

Inspection After Installation


WARNING
Check when engine is cold so as to prevent burns from any splashing engine oil.


CAUTION
Perform this inspection only when DTC P0011 is detected in self-diagnostic results of CONSULT III and it is directed according to inspection procedure of EC section.

  1. Check engine oil level.
  2.  
  3. Perform the following procedure so as to prevent the engine from being unintentionally started while checking.
    1. Release fuel pressure.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect ignition coil and injector harness connectors if practical.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Support engine using a suitable hoist or jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the RH engine mounting bracket, mounting insulator and support bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove IVT control solenoid valve.
  10.  
  11. Crank engine, and then make sure that engine oil comes out from IVT control cover oil hole. End cranking after checking.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to touch rotating parts (drive belts, idler pulley, and crankshaft pulley, etc.).


    CAUTION
    Engine oil may squirt from IVT control solenoid valve installation hole during cranking. Use a shop cloth to prevent engine oil from splashing on worker, engine components and vehicle. Do not allow engine oil to get on rubber components such as drive belts or engine mount insulators. Immediately wipe off any splashed engine oil.

  13. Clean oil groove between oil strainer and IVT control solenoid valve if engine oil does not come out from IVT control cover oil hole.

  15. Remove components between IVT control solenoid valve and camshaft sprocket (INT), and then check each oil groove for clogging.
  16.  
  17. Clean oil groove if necessary.
  18.  
  19. After inspection, installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.

Camshaft Cam Lobe Height

  1. Measure camshaft cam lobe height as shown.

  3. If wear has reduced the lobe height below specifications, replace the camshaft.

Camshaft End Play

  1. Install the camshaft in the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install dial gauge in thrust direction on front end of camshaft.

  5. Measure end play when camshaft is moved forward/backward (in direction to axis) as shown.
    1. If out of the specified range of 0.0045-0.0074 inches (0.115-0.188 mm) with a service limit of 0.0094 inches (0.24 mm), replace with new camshaft and measure again.

    3. If out of the specified range again, replace with new cylinder head.

Camshaft Journal Clearance

  1. Measure outer diameter of camshaft journal as shown.

  3. Tighten camshaft bracket bolt with specified torque.

  5. Using inside micrometer, measure inner diameter of camshaft bearing.

  7. Calculation of Camshaft Journal Clearance is by using the following formula: (Journal clearance) equals (inner diameter of camshaft bracket) minus (outer diameter of camshaft journal)
    1. When out of the specified range, replace either or both camshaft and cylinder head.

    3. Standard clearance No. 1: 0.0018-0.0034 inches (0.045-0.086 mm)
    4.  
    5. Standard clearance Nos. 2, 3, 4: 0.0014-0.0030 inches (0.035-0.076 mm)

    7. Service Limit: 0.0059 inches (0.15 mm)
      NOTE
      Inner diameter of camshaft bracket is manufactured together with cylinder head. Replace the whole cylinder head assembly.

Camshaft Runout

  1. Put V-block on precise flat bed and support No. 2 and No. 4 journal of camshaft as shown.

  3. Set dial gauges vertically to No. 3 journal as shown.
  4.  
  5. Turn camshaft in one direction slowly by hand, measure the camshaft runout on the dial gauges.
    NOTE
    Runout is the largest indicator reading after one full revolution.

  7. If actual runout exceeds the limit of 0.0020 inches (0.05 mm), replace the camshaft.

Camshaft Sprocket Runout

  1. Put V-block on precise flat bed and support No. 2 and No. 4 journal of camshaft as shown.

  3. Install camshaft sprocket on camshaft.
  4.  
  5. Measure camshaft sprocket runout.
  6.  
  7. If sprocket runout exceeds the limit of 0.00569 inches (0.15 mm), replace camshaft sprocket.

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Put V-block on precise flat bed and support No. 2 and No. 4 camshaft journals.
  2.  
  3. Set a dial indicator gauge vertically to No. 3 journal.
  4.  
  5. Turn camshaft in one direction slowly by hand and measure the camshaft runout. Runout is the largest dial indicator reading after one full revolution. If actual runout exceeds the limit, replace the camshaft.

    Standard: Less than 0.0008 in. (0.02 mm)
     
    Limit: 0.0020 in. (0.05 mm)

  7. Measure camshaft cam lobe height using a micrometer.

    Intake: 1.7904-1.7978 in. (45.475-45.665mm)
     
    Exhaust: 1.7907-1.7982 in. (45.485-45.675mm)
     
    Limit: 0.008 in. (0.2mm)

  9. To measure camshaft journal clearance, first measure outer diameter of camshaft journal.

    Standard outer diameter, journal No.1: 1.0211-1.0218 in. (25.935-25.955 mm)
     
    Standard outer diameter, journals 2, 3, 4: 0.9230-0.9238 in. (23.445-23.465 mm)

  11. Install the camshaft bracket (bearing caps) and torque the bolts as specified. See Camshaft Removal and Installation.
  12.  
  13. Using an inside micrometer, measure the inner diameter of the camshaft bearings.

    Standard No.1 inner diameter: 1.0236-1.0244 in. (26.000-26.021 mm)
     
    Standard No. 2, 3, 4 inner diameter: 0.9252-0.9260 in. (23.500-23.521 mm)
     

  14.  
  15. To calculate camshaft journal oil clearance, subtract the outer diameter of the camshaft journal (outside micrometer reading) from the inner diameter of the camshaft bearings (inside micrometer reading). The standard clearance is 0.0018-0.0034 in. (0.045-0.086 mm)
