CAUTION
Be sure to work in a well ventilated area and keep a CO2 fire extinguisher handy. Do not smoke while servicing fuel system. Keep open flames and sparks away from the work area.

  1. Remove the timing chains.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel rail and injectors.
  4.  
  5. Remove camshaft position sensor brackets.
  6.  
  7. Mark the camshaft bearing caps so they can be returned to their original positions.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the bolts in reverse of tightening order in several steps.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts, bearing caps and camshafts. Mark all parts so they can be installed in their original locations, including the camshafts.

  13. Remove valve lifters and mark them so they can be returned to their original locations.
  14.  
  15. Remove secondary timing chain tensioner from cylinder head with its stopper pin still inserted.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Before installation, clean off any old RTV sealant and clean the bolt holes.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the crankshaft is set at TDC on the No. 1 piston-s compression stroke. The crankshaft key should line up with the right bank cylinder center line.
  4.  
  5. Install camshaft chain tensioners on both sides of cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Install valve lifters.
  8.  
  9. Install exhaust and intake camshafts and fit bearing caps into place. Make the bolts only finger tight.
    NOTE
    The intake camshaft has a drill mark on sprocket mounting flange.

  11. Before installing the front bracket, make sure the sealing surfaces are clean. Apply RTV sealant and fit the front bracket into place.
  12.  
  13. Carefully torque all camshaft bolts in the correct sequence in several steps.

    Step 1: tighten bolts 7-10 in order, then bolts 1-6 in order to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm)
     
    Step 2: tighten all bolts in order to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
     
    Step 3: tighten bolts 1-6 in order to 80-104 in. lb. 9-12 Nm)

  15. Measure the alignment of the front camshaft bracket and cylinder head. If the parts are more than 0.006 in. (0.14 mm) out of alignment, re-install camshaft and camshaft bracket.

  17. Install the valve timing control solenoid valves with new gaskets.
  18.  
  19. If necessary, install camshaft position sensor.
  20.  
  21. Install the fuel rail and injectors.
  22.  
  23. Install the timing chains.
  24.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the timing chains.
  2.  
  3. Remove camshaft position brackets (RH shown LH similar).

  5. Remove the intake and exhaust camshaft brackets and the camshafts.
    1. Mark the camshafts, camshaft brackets, and bolts so they are placed in the same position and direction for installation.
    2.  
    3. Equally loosen the camshaft bracket bolts in several steps in the numerical order as shown.

  7. Remove valve lifters, if necessary.
    NOTE
    Identify installation positions to ensure proper installation.

  9. Remove secondary timing chain tensioner from cylinder head. Remove secondary tensioner with its stopper pin attached.
    NOTE
    Stopper pin was attached when secondary timing chain was removed.

To install:

  1. Before installation, remove any old Silicone RTV Sealant from component mating surfaces using a scraper.
    1. Remove the old Silicone RTV Sealant from the bolt holes and threads.
    2.  
    3. Do not scratch or damage the mating surfaces.
    4.

  3. Before installing the front cam bracket, remove the old Silicone RTV Sealant from the mating surface using a scraper. Do not scratch or damage the mating surface.
  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft until No. 1 piston is set at TDC on the compression stroke.
    NOTE
    The crankshaft key should line up with the right bank cylinder center line as shown.

  7. Install camshaft chain tensioners on both sides of cylinder head.
  8.  
  9. Install valve lifters, if removed.
    NOTE
    Install them in original positions.

  11. Install exhaust and intake camshafts and camshaft brackets.
    NOTE
    Intake camshaft has a drill mark on camshaft sprocket mounting flange.

    1. Follow your identification marks made during removal, or follow the identification marks that are present on the new camshafts components for proper placement and direction of the components.

    3. Position the camshafts:

      RH exhaust camshaft dowel pin at about 10 o'clock.
       
      LH exhaust camshaft dowel pin at about 2 o'clock.

    5. Before installing camshaft brackets, apply sealant to mating surface of No. 1 camshaft bracket.
    6.  
    7. Before installation, wipe off any protruding sealant.
    8.  
    9. Install camshaft brackets in their original positions and direction.

    11. Align the stamp marks as shown.

    13. If checking and adjusting any part of valve assembly or camshaft, check valve clearance according to the reference data.
    14.  
    15. Tighten the camshaft brackets in the three steps:

      Step 1: Tighten Bolts 7-10, then tighten 1-6 in numerical order to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
       
      Step 2: Tighten all bolts in numerical order to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
       
      Step 3: Tighten all bolts in numerical order to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  13. Measure difference in levels between front end faces of No. 1 camshaft bracket and cylinder head.
    CAUTION
    If measurement is outside the specified range of -0.0055 inches (-0.14 mm), re-install camshaft and camshaft bracket.

  15. Install camshaft position sensor (PHASE) (RH and LH bank.)
  16.  
  17. Install the fuel rail and injectors.
  18.  
  19. Install the timing chains.
  20.
