Crankshaft Front Seal

Removal & Installation



2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the following parts:

    RH front wheel
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Drive belts
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     

  2.  
  3. Remove front oil seal from front cover.
    CAUTION
    Be careful not to scratch front cover.

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install new front oil seal to front cover using suitable tool.

    1. Install new oil seal in until it is flush with front end surface of front cover.
      CAUTION
      Do not reuse oil seal. Be careful not to cause damage to circumference of oil seal.

    3. Install new oil seal in the direction shown.

2.5L Engines

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the right front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine under cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. Carefully pry the front oil seal from the front cover. Be careful not to scratch front cover or crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Apply new engine oil to new oil seal and fit it into place with the longer lip towards the outside of the engine.
  2.  
  3. Press the seal straight in using an appropriately sized drift. Make sure the garter spring in the oil seal is in position and seal lip is not inverted.
  4.  
  5. Install crankshaft pulley and toque the bolts to 31 ft. lbs. plus an additional 60°.
  6.  
  7. Installation of the remaining components is in reverse order of removal.
  8.  

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Remove the drive belts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator fan assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley as follows:
    WARNING
    Do not damage the ring gear teeth, or the signal plate teeth behind the ring gear when installing the locking tool.



    Remove the starter.
     
    Lock the ring gear using a locking tool attached to the starter bolt hole.
     

  6.  
  7. Loosen crankshaft pulley bolt using pulley holder but don-t remove the bolt yet.

  9. Position a pulley puller at recess hole of crankshaft pulley to remove crankshaft pulley.
    WARNING
    Do not use a puller claw on crankshaft

  11. Pry the front oil seal from front cover. Be careful not to damage front cover or crankshaft.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Apply new engine oil to new oil seal and fit it into place with the longer lip towards the outside of the engine.
  2.  
  3. Press the seal straight in using an appropriately sized drift. Make sure the garter spring in the oil seal is in position and seal lip is not inverted.
  4.  
  5. Install crankshaft pulley:

    Fit the pulley onto the crankshaft.
     
    Lubricate the bolt threads and seat surface with new engine oil.
     
    Torque the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Tighten the bolt an additional 90°.
     

  6.  
  7. Remove locking tool attached to the starter bolt hole.
  8.  
  9. Installation of the remaining components is in reverse order of removal.
  10.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the following parts:

    Engine undercover.
     
    Drive belts.
     

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley as follows:
    1. Remove the starter motor.
    2.  
    3. Lock the ring gear using Tool KV10117700 (J-44716) attached to the starter bolt hole.
      CAUTION
      Do not damage the ring gear teeth, or the signal plate teeth behind the ring gear when setting the stopper.

    4.  
    5. Loosen crankshaft pulley bolt using Tool KV10109300 and locate bolt seating surface at 10 mm (0.39 in) from its original position.

    7. Position a pulley puller at recess hole of crankshaft pulley to remove crankshaft pulley.
      CAUTION
      Do not use a puller claw on crankshaft pulley periphery.

  7. Remove front oil seal from front cover.
    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage front cover or crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Apply new engine oil to new oil seal and install.
    1. Install new oil seal in the direction as shown.
      CAUTION
      Press fit straight and avoid causing burrs or tilting the oil seal.

    3. Press-fit oil seal until it becomes flush with the timing chain case end face, using suitable tool.
    4.  
    5. Make sure the garter spring in the oil seal is in position and seal lip is not inverted.

  3. Install crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt in two steps.
    1. Lubricate thread and seat surface of the bolt with new engine oil.
    2.  
    3. For the second step angle tighten using Tool KV10112100 (BT-8653-A).
    4.  
    5. Step 1: 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Step 2: Tighten an additional 84-90 degrees
    8.

  5. Remove tool attached to the starter bolt hole.
  6.  
  7. Installation of the remaining components is in reverse order of removal.
  8.
