Removal & Installation



2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Remove the engine and transaxle assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing chain.
  4.  
  5. Remove the camshafts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plugs.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in reverse order of tightening sequence and remove the cylinder head.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket surfaces. Use new cylinder head bolts.
  2.  
  3. Fit the new head gasket into place.
  4.  
  5. Fit the cylinder head into place. Lubricate the bolts with new engine oil and install them finger tight.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the head bolts in sequence in several steps:

    Step 1: torque to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)
     
    Step 2: Loosen all bolts in the reverse order of tightening.
     
    Step 3: torque to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Step 4: tighten an additional 75°
     
    Step 5: tighten an additional 75°

  9. Install remaining components and install engine.
  10.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the engine and transaxle assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing chain.
  4.  
  5. Remove the camshafts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coils and spark plugs.
  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold and three way catalyst.
  10.  
  11. Remove cylinder head by loosening bolts in the order as shown.

  13. If necessary to transfer to new cylinder head or remove for reconditioning, remove the intake manifold collector, intake manifold, and fuel tube assembly.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Follow the steps below to tighten the cylinder head bolts in the numerical order as shown.

    1. Apply new engine oil to the threads and the seating surfaces of bolts.
    2.  
    3. Step 1: 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Step 2: Loosen all bolts in reverse order of tightening.
    6.  
    7. Step 3: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
    8.  
    9. Step 4 75 degrees clockwise
    10.  
    11. Step 5 75 degrees clockwise
      CAUTION
      If cylinder head bolts are re-used, check their outer diameters before installation. Follow the Outer Diameter of Cylinder Head Bolts measurement procedure. Check and confirm the tightening angle by using angle wrench or protractor. Avoid judgment by visual inspection without the tool.

  7. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Remove the intake and exhaust camshafts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the coolant outlet assembly.

  5. Remove the timing chain case bolts from the cylinder heads.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the cylinder head bolts gradually in three stages in the reverse order of tightening sequence.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cylinder head.
  10.  

To install:


NOTE
New cylinder head bolts are required.

  1. Clean all sealing surfaces and bolt holes.
  2.  
  3. Make sure cylinder No. 1 is at TDC.
  4.  
  5. Fit new cylinder head gaskets in place.
  6.  
  7. Fit the cylinder head into place and lubricate the bolt threads with new engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Install the cylinder head bolts and torque in numerical sequence in the following steps.

    Step 1: torque to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)
     
    Step 2: Loosen in the reverse order of tightening
     
    Step 3: torque to 29 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
     
    Step 4: tighten an additional 90°
     
    Step 5: tighten an additional 90°

  10.  
  11. Install remaining components.

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the engine from the vehicle
  2.  
  3. Remove the RH and LH exhaust manifold and three way catalysts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear timing chain case.
  6.  
  7. Remove the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intake and exhaust camshafts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coolant outlet housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the RH and LH cylinder head bolts.
    1. The bolts should be loosened gradually in three stages.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the bolts in the numerical order as shown.

  15. Remove cylinder heads and gaskets.
    NOTE
    Discard the cylinder head gaskets and use new gaskets for installation.

  16.  

To install:

  1. Turn the crankshaft until No. 1 piston is set at TDC on the compression stroke. The crankshaft key should line up with the right bank cylinder center line as shown.

  3. Install new gaskets on the cylinder heads.
    CAUTION
    Do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately or valves will strike piston heads.

  5. Inspect the cylinder head bolts before installing the cylinder heads.
    CAUTION
    Cylinder head bolts are tightened by degree rotation tightening method. Whenever the size difference between d1 and d2 exceeds the limit, replace the bolts with new ones.

  7. Lubricate threads and seat surfaces of the bolts with new engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Install the cylinder heads on the cylinder block. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the five steps in the numerical order as shown using Tool KV10112100 (BT-8653-A).
