2.5L & 3.5L Engines

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Remove the oil pump cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove inner rotor and outer rotor from front cover.
  4.  
  5. After removing regulator plug, remove regulator spring and regulator valve.
  6.  
  7. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between outer rotor and oil pump body (position 1).

    2.5L engine: 0.0045-0.0070 in. (0.114-0.179 mm)
     
    3.5L engine: 0.0045-0.0102 in. (0.114-0.260 mm)

  9. Measure the clearance between the inner rotor and outer rotor (position 2).

    2.5L engine: 0.0067-0.0087 in. (0.170-0.220 mm)
     
    3.5L engine: less than 0.0071 (0.180 mm)

  11. Using feeler gauges and a straight edge, measure the side clearance between the inner rotor and oil pump body (position 3)

    2.5L engine: 0.0012-0.0028 in. (0.030-0.070 mm.
     
    2.5L engine: 0.0012-0.0028 in. (0.030-0.070 mm.

  13. Measure the side clearance between the outer rotor and oil pump body (position 4)

    2.5L engine: 0.0024-0.0043 in. (0.060-0.110 mm)
     
    2.5L engine: 0.0020-0.0043 in. (0.050-0.110 mm)

  15. Calculate the clearance between inner rotor and oil pump body as follows:

    Measure the outer diameter of protruded portion of inner rotor (Position 5).
     
    Measure the inner diameter of oil pump body with inside micrometer (Position 6).
     
    Clearance = (Inner diameter of oil pump body) - (Outer diameter of inner rotor).
     
    2.5L engine: 0.0016-0.0038 in. (0.040-0.097 mm)
     
    3.5L engine: 0.0018-0.0036 in. (0.045-0.091 mm)

  17. Calculate regulator valve clearance using the same technique.
    WARNING
    Coat regulator valve with engine oil. Check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.



    2.5L engine: 0.0014-0.0028 in. (0.035-0.070 mm).
     
    3.5L engine: 0.0016-0.0038 in. (0.040-0.097 mm).

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the oil pump cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove inner rotor and outer rotor from front cover.
  4.  
  5. After removing regulator plug, remove regulator spring and regulator valve.
  6.  
  7. Measure the clearance of the oil pump parts to check they are within specification.
  8.  
  9. Measure clearance with feeler gauge as follows:

    1. Measure clearance between outer rotor and oil pump body (position 1).

    3. Standard clearance is 0.0045-0.0070 inches (0.114-0.179 mm).

    5. Measure tip clearance between inner rotor and outer rotor (position 2).
    6.  
    7. Standard clearance is 0.0067-0.0087 inches (0.170-0.220 mm).

  11. Measure clearance with feeler gauge and straightedge as follows:

    1. Measure side clearance between inner rotor and oil pump body (position 3).

    3. Standard clearance is 0.0012-0.0028 inches (0.030-0.070 mm).

    5. Measure side clearance between outer rotor and oil pump body (position 4).

    7. Standard clearance is 0.0024-0.0043 inches (0.060-0.110 mm).

  13. Calculate the clearance between inner rotor and oil pump body as follows:
    1. Measure the outer diameter of protruded portion of inner rotor (Position 5).

    3. Standard clearance is 0.0016-0.0038 inches (0.040-0.097 mm).
      CAUTION
      Coat regulator valve with engine oil. Check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.

  17. Assembly is in the reverse order of disassembly.
    1. Install the inner rotor and outer rotor with the punched marks on the oil pump cover side.
      CAUTION
      Before assembly apply new engine oil to the parts as specified.

  7. After removing regulator plug, remove spring and regulator valve.

Clearance Of Oil Pump Parts

  1. Measure clearance with feeler gauge.

    1. Measure clearance between outer rotor and oil pump body (position 1).

    3. Standard clearance is 0.0045-0.0102 inches (0.114-0.260 mm).

    5. Measure tip clearance between inner rotor and outer rotor (position 2).

    7. Standard clearance is below 0.0071 inches (0.180 mm).

Regulator Valve

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Visually inspect components for wear and damage.
  2.  
  3. Check oil pressure regulator valve sliding surface and valve spring.
  4.  
  5. Coat regulator valve with engine oil. Check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.
    NOTE
    If damaged, replace regulator valve set or oil pump body.

Regulator Valve Clearance

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Calculate regulator valve clearance as follows:
    1. (Clearance 6) = D (Valve hole diameter) - E (Outer diameter of valve)
      NOTE
      If it exceeds the standard, replace the oil pump body.


      CAUTION
      Coat regulator valve with engine oil. Check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.

  3. Assembly is in the reverse order of disassembly.
    1. Assemble the inner rotor and outer rotor with the punched marks on the oil pump cover side.
      CAUTION
      Before assembly apply new engine oil to the parts as specified.

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the timing chain.
  2.  
  3. Remove oil pump assembly.
  4.  
  5. Installation is in the reverse of removal. Make sure the punch marks on the pump rotors both face the oil pump cover.

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

The oil pump is part of the front cover. For removal and installation of the oil pump, it is necessary to remove and install the front cover. Refer to Front Cover section for Removal and Installation.

  1. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing chain.
  6.  
  7. Remove oil pump assembly.
