Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove engine and transaxle assembly and separate them.
  2.  
  3. Remove clutch and flywheel or drive plate.
  4.  
  5. On 3.5L engine, remove seal retainer.
  6.  
  7. On other engines, carefully pry rear oil seal out with a suitable tool. Be careful to not damage sealing surfaces on the engine block or crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Apply RTV sealant to entire outside area of new rear oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Fit the seal into place with the longer lip towards the outside of the engine.
  4.  
  5. Press the seal flush with the engine block or seal retainer using a suitable press tool. Make sure the seal is not tilted or curled. Wipe away any excess sealant.
  6.  
  7. On 3.5L engine, apply RTV sealant to the seal retainer and install it to the engine. Torque the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the transaxle.
  2.  
  3. Remove flywheel (MT) or drive plate (CVT).
  4.  
  5. Remove rear oil seal using suitable tool.
    CAUTION
    Be careful not to scratch rear oil seal retainer.

  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply new engine oil to new oil seal and install it using a suitable tool.
    1. Install new oil seal in the direction shown.

    3. Press fit new oil seal straight using a suitable drift, to avoid causing burrs or tilting.

    5. Press in the new oil seal to the specified depth as shown.

  3. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the engine and transaxle assembly.
  2.  
  3. Separate the transaxle from the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove flywheel (M/T) or drive plate (CVT).
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove rear oil seal retainer using Tool KV10111100 (J-37228).
    CAUTION



    Be careful not to damage mating surface.
     
    If rear oil seal retainer is removed, replace it with a new one.

To install:

  1. Remove old liquid gasket material from mating surface of cylinder block and oil pan using a suitable scraper.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket to the new rear oil seal retainer using suitable tool.

    1. Use Genuine Silicone RTV Sealant or equivalent.
    2.  
    3. Assembly should be completed within 5 minutes after coating.

  5. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
    CAUTION
    When replacing an engine or transmission you must make sure the dowels are installed correctly during re-assembly. Improper alignment caused by missing dowels may cause vibration, oil leaks or breakage of drivetrain components.
