Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

CAUTION
Dust and dirt accumulating on brake parts during normal use may contain asbestos fibers from production or aftermarket brake linings. Breathing excessive concentrations of asbestos fibers can cause serious bodily harm. Exercise care when servicing brake parts. Do not sand or grind brake lining unless equipment used is designed to contain the dust residue. Do not clean brake parts with compressed air or by dry brushing. Cleaning should be done by dampening the brake components with a fine mist of water, then wiping the brake components clean with a dampened cloth. Dispose of cloth and all residue containing asbestos fibers in an impermeable container with the appropriate label. Follow practices prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the handling, processing, and disposing of dust or debris that may contain asbestos fibers.

WARNING
While removing cylinder body, do not depress brake pedal because piston will pop out. Do not damage piston boot. Keep rotor free from brake fluid.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4.
  5. Fasten the disc rotor using a lug nut.
  6.
  7. Drain brake fluid, as follows:
    WARNING
Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted areas; it may cause paint damage. If brake fluid is splashed on painted areas, wash it away with water immediately.

    WARNING
Before working, disconnect connectors of ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) or battery cable from the negative terminal.

    1. Connect a vinyl tube to bleed valve.
    2.
    3. Depress brake pedal, loosen bleed valve, and gradually remove brake fluid.
    4.

  8.
  9. Remove union bolt, and then disconnect brake hose from caliper assembly.
  10.
  11. Remove torque member bolts, and remove brake caliper assembly.
    WARNING
Do not drop the brake pads.

To install:

WARNING
While removing cylinder body, do not depress brake pedal because piston will pop out. Do not damage piston boot. Keep rotor free from brake fluid.

  1. Install the rotor.
    WARNING
Put alignment marks on disc rotor and wheel hub at the time of removal when reusing disc rotor.

  2.
  3. Install brake caliper assembly to vehicle, and tighten torque member bolts to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).
    WARNING
Do not allow oil or any moisture on all contact surfaces between steering knuckle and caliper assembly, bolts, and washer.

  4.
  5. Attach the brake hose to the caliper and fasten with the union bolt. Tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
    WARNING
    Never reuse drained brake fluid.

  8.
  9. Refill the brake master cylinder with new DOT 3 brake fluid, as follows:
    1. Make sure there is no foreign material in the reservoir tank, and refill with new brake fluid.
    2.
    3. Loosen bleed valve, depress brake pedal slowly to full stroke and then release it. Repeat the procedure every 2 or 3 seconds until the new brake fluid comes out, then close the bleed valve while depressing the pedal. Repeat the same work for each wheel.
    4.
    5. Bleed the brake system, as outlined in this section.
    6.
