Overhaul



Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Remove the strut from the vehicles.
  2.  
  3. Install a strut compressor tool to the strut and secure it in a vise. When installing the tool, wrap a shop cloth around strut to protect it from damage.

  5. Slightly loosen piston rod lock nut.
    CAUTION
    Do not remove piston rod lock nut completely. If it is removed completely, the coil spring can jump out and may cause serious damage or injury.

  7. Compress coil spring using a commercially available spring compressor.
    CAUTION
    Make sure that the pawls of the two spring compressors are firmly hooked on the spring. The spring compressors must be tightened alternately so as not to tilt the spring.

  9. Make sure coil spring is free between upper and lower seats, then remove piston rod lock nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove strut spacer, strut mount insulator, strut mounting insulator bracket thrust bearing, spring upper seat, and upper rubber seat. Then remove coil spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove bound bumper from spring upper seat.
  14.  
  15. Gradually release spring compressor and remove coil spring.

  17. To assemble the strut, compress the coil spring using a spring compressor tool and install it onto the strut. Face tube side of coil spring downward. Align lower end to spring seat as shown.
    CAUTION
    Be sure spring compressor is securely attached to coil spring.

  19. Connect bound bumper to spring upper seat.
    WARNING
    Be sure to install bound bumper to spring upper seat securely. When installing bound bumper, use soapy water. Do not use machine oil or other lubricants.

  21. Install the upper rubber seat, spring upper seats, thrust bearing, strut mount insulator, and strut spacer. Install a new lock nut but don-t tighten it yet.

  23. Be sure the strut mount insulator and spring seat are positioned properly.

  25. On Altima, torque the new piston rod lock nut to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm).

  27. Carefully remove the spring compressor.
  28.  

Assembly

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Compress coil spring using a spring compressor (commercial service tool), and install it onto the strut.
    CAUTION
    Face tube side of coil spring downward. Align lower end to spring seat as shown.


    WARNING
    Be sure spring compressor is securely attached to coil spring. Compress coil spring.

  3. Connect bound bumper to spring upper seat.
    CAUTION



    Be sure to install bound bumper to spring upper seat securely.
     
    When installing bound bumper, use soapy water. Do not use machine oil or other lubricants.

  5. Install small parts to the strut.
    CAUTION
    Do not reuse piston rod lock nut.



    Connect upper rubber seat, spring upper seats, thrust bearing, strut mount insulator, and strut spacer. Temporarily install piston rod lock nut.

  7. Be sure arrows on strut mount insulator and spring upper seat are positioned as shown. Also be sure notch in the strut spacer is positioned as shown.

  9. Be sure coil spring is properly set in spring rubber seat. Gradually release spring compressor.
    CAUTION
    Be sure upper rubber seat is properly aligned to spring upper seat and coil spring.

  11. Tighten piston rod lock nut to the specified torque.
  12.  
  13. Remove Tool ST35652000 from strut.
  14.  

Disassembly

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Install Tool ST35652000 to strut and secure it in a vise.
    CAUTION
    When installing Tool ST35652000, wrap a shop cloth around strut to protect it from damage.

  3. Slightly loosen piston rod lock nut.
    WARNING
    Do not remove piston rod lock nut completely. If it is removed completely, the coil spring can jump out and may cause serious damage or injury.

  11. Remove bound bumper from spring upper seat.

  13. Gradually release spring compressor (commercial service tool), and remove coil spring.

Inspection After Disassembly

  1. Check for cracks, wear, and damage, and replace if necessary.
  2.  

Insulator And Rubber Parts

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Check strut mount insulator for cracks and rubber parts for wear. Replace them if necessary.
  2.  

Strut

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Check strut for deformation, cracks, and damage, and replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Check piston rod for damage, uneven wear, and distortion, and replace if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Check welded and sealed areas for oil leakage, and replace if necessary.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Raise and safely support vehicle and remove front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake caliper without disconnecting the brake hose and hang it from the body with wire.
  4.  
  5. Remove wheel speed sensor harness from strut.
  6.  
  7. Remove brake hose lock plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove steering knuckle-to-strut bolts and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove bolt on strut tower bar, then bolts on strut tower and remove strut from vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Be sure arrows on strut mount insulator and spring upper seat point towards the outside of the vehicle. Also be sure notch in strut spacer is positioned the same way, then install strut.
  2.  
  3. Assemble upper mounting plate with its notch facing the outside of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Torque the strut mount bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) and the center nut to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Torque the steering knuckle-to-strut bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  8.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010


NOTE
Refer to the exploded view of front suspension while servicing this component.

  1. Remove wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove brake caliper and reposition aside using wire.
    CAUTION
    Avoid depressing brake pedal with brake caliper removed.

  4.  
  5. Remove wheel sensor electrical harness from strut.
  6.  
  7. Remove brake hose lock plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove steering knuckle to strut bolts and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove bolt on strut tower bar then bolts on strut tower and remove strut from vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Check the strut for any oil leakage or other damage and replace as necessary.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. Refer to "Exploded View" for tightening torque.
  4.  
  5. Be sure arrows on strut mount insulator and spring upper seat are positioned as shown. Also be sure notch in strut spacer is positioned as shown. Then install strut.
  6.  
  7. Assemble upper mounting plate with its notch facing toward the outside.
