NOTE
Heater core removal requires removing the windshield wiper system, steering column and dashboard.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Position the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative (() battery cable; then, the positive (+) battery cable.
    NOTE
    Wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting the battery cables for the charge in the air bag circuit to dissipate before working on the air bag module(s).

  8.  
  9. Properly discharge and recover the refrigerant from the A/C system.

  11. Drain the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. With 3.5L engine, remove the strut tower brace, the front cowl and the windshield wiper system.

  15. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core pipes. Cap or wrap the pipe joint with a suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid the entry of contaminants into the system.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the expansion valve. Cap or wrap the lines to keep out dirt and moisture.

  19. Remove the steering column:

    Carefully peel the airbag module from the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel.
     
    Remove the two steering column cover screws and remove the column upper and lower covers.
     
    Remove the spiral spring (clock spring) and steering column switches.
     
    Remove instrument driver side lower panel.
     
    Remove knee protector.
     
    Remove tire pressure receiver.
     
    Outside the cabin, remove the lower bolt from the lower shaft joint.
     
    Inside the cabin, remove bolts and nut from the upper joint, then remove lower steering shaft.
     
    Inside the cabin, loosen the herbie clip, then remove hole cover seal.
     
    Remove nuts of hole cover and remove clamp and hole cover from dash panel.
     
    Disconnect wiring harness from steering column assembly.
     
    Remove the bolts to remove the steering column from the vehicle.

  21. Remove the A-pillar finishers.
  22.  
  23. With automatic transmission, put selector lever in the drive (D) position, then remove selector lever knob. With manual transmission, put the shift lever in neutral, then remove shift lever knob.

  25. Remove the center cluster lid D and remove the storage bin or CD changer (if equipped).
  26.  
  27. Remove both instrument side masks
  28.  
  29. Open the fuse block cover, remove the instrument lower cover screw (A), then remove the instrument lower cover (1).
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the in-vehicle sensor, VDC switch and trunk lid release switch. Disconnect the aspirator tube.
  32.  
  33. Remove the two screws at the top of the center console.
  34.  
  35. Remove both center console side panels and remove the console side screws.
  36.  
  37. Remove the screws on each side of the console at the rear and remove the center console.
  38.  
  39. Open the glove box door and remove three screws above the opening.
  40.  
  41. Close the door and remove the two screws below it to remove the glove box.
  42.  
  43. Remove the instrument cluster lid (above the cluster itself).
  44.  
  45. Remove the two screws, then remove the instruments. Carefully disconnect the wiring.
  46.  
  47. Remove the center ventilator grilles.
  48.  
  49. Remove the cluster lid and disconnect wiring as required.
  50.  
  51. Remove both tweeter speaker grilles and disconnect the harness connectors.
  52.  
  53. Remove the passenger air bag bolt.
  54.  
  55. Remove the remaining instrument panel screws.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the audio harness connector located near the RH A-pillar.
  58.  
  59. Lift the instrument panel high enough in order to disconnect all the necessary harness connectors, then remove the instrument panel.
  60.  
  61. Disconnect the drain hose.
  62.  
  63. Remove the heater and cooling unit assembly attached to the steering member as one assembly from the vehicle.
  64.  
  65. Remove the blower unit from the heater and cooling unit and steering member assembly.
  66.  

To install:

  1. Assemble the blower unit and heater/cooling case and install into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Connect the drain hose.
  4.  
  5. Fit the instrument panel into place and begin connecting the wiring.
  6.  
  7. Install the remaining instrument panel screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the passenger air bag.
  10.  
  11. Install the speakers and the center ventilator grilles.
  12.  
  13. Install the instruments and the instrument cluster lid (above the cluster itself).
  14.  
  15. Install the glove box.
  16.  
  17. Install the center console, center cluster and the storage bin or CD changer (if equipped).
  18.  
  19. Install the steering column:

    Fit the steering column into the vehicle and secure the bolts.
     
    Connect the wiring as far as possible.
     
    Install the lower steering shaft.
     
    Fit the hole cover into place and install the seal and clamp.

  21. Install the remaining components.
  22.  
  23. Connect the refrigerant and heater hoses.
  24.  
  25. Make sure no one is in the vehicle when connecting the battery in case the airbag deploys.
  26.  
  27. Refill all fluids, recharge the A/C system and run the engine to check for leaks or other problems.
  28.  
  29. Install the windshield wiper system and cowl.
  30.  

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Discharge the refrigerant from the A/C system.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiper motor and linkage.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper cowl (for VQ35DE only).
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut tower bar (for VQ35DE only).
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower RH cowl (for VQ35DE only).
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core pipes.
    CAUTION
    Cap or wrap the pipe joint with a suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid the entry of contaminants into the system.

  17. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the expansion valve.
    CAUTION
    Cap or wrap the line joint with a suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid the entry of contaminants into the system.

  18.  
  19. Remove the instrument panel assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering column assembly.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the drain hose.
  24.  
  25. Remove the heater and cooling unit assembly attached to the steering member as one assembly from the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the blower unit from the heater and cooling unit and steering member assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove the heater and cooling unit from the steering member.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. Fill the radiator with the specified water and coolant mixture.
  4.  
  5. Recharge the A/C system.
  6.  

Hybrid



Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2010

  1. Discharge the refrigerant from the A/C system.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wiper motor and linkage.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the 12 volt battery negative and positive terminals.
  8.  
  9. Remove the strut tower bar.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower RH cowl.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core pipes.
    CAUTION
    Cap or wrap the pipe joint with a suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid the entry of contaminants into the system.

  14.  
  15. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the expansion valve.
    CAUTION
    Cap or wrap the line joint with a suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid the entry of contaminants into the system.

  16.  
  17. Remove the instrument panel assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering column assembly.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the drain hose.
  22.  
  23. Remove the heater and cooling unit assembly attached to the steering member as one assembly from the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the blower unit from the heater and cooling unit and steering member assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the heater and cooling unit from the steering member.

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
