Transaxle Removal & Installation

CAUTION
If transaxle assembly is removed from the vehicle, always replace Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC). Inserted CSC returns to the original position when removing transaxle assembly. Dust on clutch disc sliding parts may damage CSC seal and may cause clutch fluid leakage.

  1. Remove the engine and transaxle as an assembly.
    CAUTION
    Do not depress clutch pedal during removal procedure.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the following:

    Back-up lamp switch
     
    Park/neutral position switch
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the harness from the transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter motor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts.
  10.  
  11. Separate the transaxle from the engine.
  12.  
  13. If necessary remove the following:

    Air breather hose
     
    Switches
     
    LH engine mount
     
    Brackets

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. If transaxle is removed from the vehicle, always replace CSC.
  4.  
  5. When installing the transaxle assembly to the engine, install the bolts following the standard below.
  6.  
  7. For 2.5L engine, install bolts in the following locations:
    1. Bolt A: Length: 1.77 inches (45 mm)
    2.  
    3. Bolts B: Length: 1.77 inches (45 mm)
    4.  
    5. Bolt C: Length: 3.15 inches (80 mm)
    6.  
    7. Bolts D: Length: 1.77 inches (45 mm)
    8.  
    9. Bolts E: Length: 1.38 inches (35 mm)
    10.  
    11. Bolt F: Length: 1.77 inches (45 mm)

  9. Torque Bolt A to 26 ft. lbs. 35 Nm). Tighten Bolts B and C to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm). Torque Bolts D and E to 31 ft. lbs. ( 43 Nm). Tighten Bolt F to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).

  11. For 3.5L engine, install bolts in the following locations:
    1. Bolts A: Length: 2.17 inches (55 mm)
    2.  
    3. Bolts B: Length: 4.59 inches (117 mm)
    4.  
    5. Bolts C: Length: 1.77 inches (45 mm)

  13. Torque Bolts A and B to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm). Tighten Bolts C to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    CAUTION
    When installing transaxle assembly do not bring transaxle input shaft into contact with clutch cover.

  15. Bleed the air from the clutch hydraulic system.
  16.  
  17. After installation, check oil level, and check for leaks and loose mechanisms.
