Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support vehicle and remove rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake lever and remove rear rotors. If rotor cannot be removed, secure the rotor in place with wheel nuts and remove adjuster hole plug. Pry adjuster up to retract and loosen brake shoes.
  6.  
  7. Remove anti-rattle pins, retainers, anti-rattle springs, and return springs.
  8.  
  9. Remove parking brake shoes, adjuster assembly, and toggle lever.


  10.  
  11. After cleaning the backplate, carefully apply small dabs of PBC (Poly Butyl Cuprysil) grease or equivalent to the areas shown in the illustration.

  13. Lightly grease and assemble adjuster. Shorten adjuster all the way.
  14.  
  15. Clean and dry the drum inner surface.
  16.  
  17. Assemble the brakes, springs and adjusters to the backplate.
  18.  
  19. Install brake rotor and adjust the parking brake.
  20.  
  21. Drive the vehicle at 25 mph (40 kph) for about ten seconds with the parking brake engaged to break in the new shoes.

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove rear wheel and tires.
  2.  
  3. Remove rear disc rotor with parking brake control device assembly in the fully released position.
  4.  
  5. If disc rotor cannot be removed, remove as follows:
    1. Secure the disc rotor in place with wheel nuts and remove adjuster hole plug.
    2.  
    3. Rotate adjuster in direction (B) to retract and loosen brake shoe, using tool as shown.

  7. Remove anti-rattle pins, retainers, anti-rattle springs, and return springs.
  8.  
  9. Remove parking brake shoes, adjuster assembly, and toggle lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the back plate.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:
    1. Apply PBC (Poly Butyl Cuprysil) grease or equivalent to the specified points during assembly.
    2.  
    3. Assemble adjusters so that threaded part is expanded when rotating it in the direction shown.
    4.  
    5. Shorten adjuster by rotating it as shown.

    7. Check shoe sliding surface and drum inner surface for grease. Wipe it off if it adhere on the surfaces.
    8.  
    9. Perform break-in operation as follows after replacing brake shoes or disc rotors, or if brakes do not function well.

  3. Adjust parking brake control device assembly stroke to the specified amount.
  4.  
  5. Perform parking brake break-in (drag run) operation by driving vehicle under the following conditions:
    1. Drive the vehicle forward.
    2.  
    3. Maintain vehicle speed at approximately 40 km/h (25 MPH) keeping it constant in forward direction.
    4.  
    5. Apply the parking brake at an operating force of approximately 88 lbs. (400 N) with constant force.
    6.  
    7. Release the parking brake after approximately 10 seconds.
    8.

  7. Check parking brake control device assembly stroke of parking brake. Readjust as necessary if it is outside the standard specifications.
