Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Remove the front tires.
  2.  
  3. Remove undercover.

  5. Remove lower side bolt of lower joint.

  7. Remove cotter pin and loosen the nut.

  9. Remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle so as not to damage ball joint boot using the Tool HT72520000 (J-25730-A).
    CAUTION
    Temporarily tighten the nut to prevent damage to threads and to prevent the Tool from suddenly coming off.

  11. Remove high and low pressure piping of hydraulic piping, and then drain power steering fluid.
  12.  
  13. Remove steering hydraulic piping bracket from front suspension member.
  14.  
  15. Remove SSPS valve harness connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove bolts and nuts of steering gear assembly, and then remove steering gear assembly from vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Check for fluid leaks or damage to steering gear. If any exist, replace steering gear as an assembly.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. When installing lower joint to steering gear assembly, follow the procedure listed below.
    1. Set rack of steering gear in the neutral position.
      NOTE
      To get the neutral position of rack, turn gear-sub assembly and measure the distance of inner socket, and then measure the intermediate position of the distance.

    3. Align rear cover cap projection with the marking position of gear housing assembly.

    5. Install slit part of lower joint aligning with the projection of rear cover cap. Make sure that the slit part of lower joint is aligned with both the projection of rear cover cap and the marking position of gear housing assembly.

  5. After installation, bleed air from the steering hydraulic system.
  6.  
  7. Perform final tightening of nuts and bolts on each part under unladen conditions with tires on level ground when removing steering gear assembly. Check wheel alignment.
  8.  
  9. Make sure that steering wheel operates smoothly by turning several times from full left stop to full right stop.
  10.  

Hybrid Models



Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2010

  1. Remove tires and wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove engine undercover.
  4.  
  5. Remove stabilizer bar connecting rods from struts and reposition stabilizer bar.
  6.  
  7. Remove front exhaust tube.
  8.  
  9. Remove lower side bolt of lower steering joint.

  11. Remove cotter pin and then loosen the nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle so as not to damage ball joint boot using Tool HT72520000 (J-25730-A) as shown.
    WARNING
    Temporarily tighten the nut to prevent damage to threads and to prevent the Tool from suddenly coming off.

  15. Disconnect EPS torque sensor harness connector, EPS motor angle sensor harness connector and EPS motor power line connector from the steering gear.
    NOTE
    For EPS motor power line connector, perform the following;

    1. Pull lock plate up until it stops.
    2.  
    3. Turn the lock lever until it stops.
    4.  
    5. Pull EPS motor power line connector to disconnect it.
    6.

  17. Remove ground bracket and harness bracket on steering gear.
  18.  
  19. Remove bolts and nuts of steering gear assembly, and then remove steering gear assembly from vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Check for damage to steering gear. If any exist, replace steering gear as an assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
    WARNING
    After connecting the EPS motor power line connector, make sure the connector is locked.

  3. When installing lower joint to steering gear assembly, follow the procedure listed below.
    1. Set rack of steering gear in the neutral position.
      NOTE
      To get the neutral position of rack, turn gear-sub assembly and measure the distance of inner socket, and then measure the intermediate position of the distance.

    2.  
    3. Install slit part of lower shaft assembly joint aligning with the marking position of steering gear assembly input shaft. Make sure that the slit part of lower joint is aligned with the marking position of gear housing assembly input shaft.

  5. Perform final tightening of nuts and bolts on each part under unladen conditions with tires on level ground when removing steering gear assembly. Check wheel alignment.
  6.  
  7. Make sure that steering wheel operates smoothly by turning several times from full left stop to full right stop.
