Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2010

  1. Set wheels to the straight ahead-position.
  2.  
  3. Remove lower side bolt of lower shaft assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove upper side bolt of lower shaft, then remove lower shaft assembly from steering gear assembly.
  6.  
  7. Loosen Herbie clip, then remove hole cover seal from hole cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove hole cover nuts, then remove hole cover from dash panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove driver air bag module.
  12.  
  13. Remove steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Remove steering column cover and instrument driver lower panel and knee protector.
  16.  
  17. Remove spiral cable.
  18.  
  19. Remove combination switch.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect harness from steering column.
  22.  
  23. Remove steering column nuts, then remove steering column assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  
  3. When installing lower shaft assembly to steering gear assembly, follow the procedure listed below.
    1. Set rack of steering gear in the neutral position.
      NOTE
      To get the neutral position of rack, turn gear-sub assembly and measure the distance of inner socket, and then measure the intermediate position of the distance.

    3. Install slit part of lower shaft assembly joint aligning with the marking position of steering gear assembly input shaft. Make sure that the slit part of lower joint is aligned with the marking position of gear housing assembly input shaft.
    4.  
    5. Perform final tightening of nuts and bolts on each part under unladen conditions with tires on level ground when removing steering gear assembly. Check wheel alignment.

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2009-2010

  1. Set wheels to the straight-ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Remove driver air bag module.
  4.  
  5. Remove steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove instrument lower cover (LH).
  8.  
  9. Remove knee protector bolts, then remove knee protector.

  11. Remove steering column cover (upper and lower).
  12.  
  13. Remove combination switch and spiral cable.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect each switch connector installed to steering column assembly, and then disconnect harness from steering column assembly.

  17. Remove bolt and nut of column upper joint.

  19. Remove steering column assembly and nuts, then remove steering column assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

    5. Install slit part of lower shaft assembly aligning with the projection of rear cover cap. Make sure that the slit part of lower shaft assembly is aligned with both the projection of rear cover cap and the marking position of gear housing assembly.
    6.  
    7. Perform final tightening of nuts and bolts on each part under unladen conditions with tires on level ground when removing steering gear assembly. Check wheel alignment.
