2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 2007-2010

WARNING
Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could occur from high pressure coolant escaping from the radiator.

CAUTION

When removing water pump assembly, be careful not to get coolant on drive belt.

Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit.

After installing water pump, connect hose and clamp securely, then check for leaks using radiator cap tester.

  1. Drain engine coolant from the radiator.
    CAUTION
Perform when the engine is cold.

  2.
  3. Remove drive belt.
  4.
  5. Remove engine cover.
  6.
  7. Remove alternator.

  10.
  11. Remove fender protector RH.
  12.
  13. Remove engine ground strap.
  14.
  15. Remove the water pump.
    CAUTION
Handle the water pump vane so that it does not contact any other parts. Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as an assembly.

    NOTE
If it is necessary to remove the water pipe, the exhaust manifold and three way catalyst assembly must be removed.

  13. Remove chain tensioner cover and water pump cover.
  14.
  15. Remove the timing chain tensioner assembly.
    WARNING
Be careful not to drop the bolts inside the engine.

Pull the lever down to release the plunger stopper tab.

Insert a pin into the tensioner body hole to hold the lever and keep the plunger stopper tab released. A drill bit or 1.2 mm Allen wrench can be used for a stopper pin.

Push the plunger into the tensioner body by pressing the slack guide.

Keep the slack guide pressed and push the stopper pin deeper into the chain tensioner body.

    Remove chain tensioner.

  16.
  17. Remove the three water pump bolts. Make a gap between water pump gear and timing chain by turning crankshaft pulley counterclockwise until timing chain loosens on water pump sprocket.
  18.
  19. Two M8 X 1.25 mm bolts, 2 in. (50 mm) long, are used to extract the pump from the engine. Screw the bolts into the water pump-s upper and lower bolt holes until they reach the timing chain case. Alternately tighten each bolt a half turn to extract the water pump.
    NOTE
Pull the pump straight out to prevent the pump vanes from contacting housing or timing chain.

  20.
  21. Remove the M8 bolts and two O-rings from the pump.

  22.

To install:

  1. Install two new O-rings to water pump.
  2.
  3. Apply engine oil and coolant to the O-rings. Locate the O-ring with the white paint mark towards the front of the engine.
  4.
  5. Carefully install the water pump to avoid damaging or displacing the O-rings.
  6.
  7. Make sure the timing chain and water pump sprocket are engaged.
  8.
  9. Gradually tighten the bolts alternately and evenly. Torque to 85 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.
  11. Turn the crankshaft pulley approximately 20° clockwise so the timing chain is loose on the chain tensioner side.
  12.
  13. Make sure the chain tensioner and timing chain mounting area are clean, then apply oil to the tensioner oil hole.
  14.
  15. Install the timing chain tensioner and torque the bolts to 75 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  16.
  17. Remove the stopper pin.
  18.
  19. Clean the sealing surfaces of the chain tensioner cover and water pump cover. Apply RTV sealant and install the covers.
  20.
  21. Install water drain plug into the cylinder block
  22.
  23. Install idler pulley and torque bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  24.
  25. Install the remaining components.
  26.
  27. Refill the engine with coolant.
  28.
  29. After starting the engine, let it idle for three minutes, then rev to 3,000 rpm under no load to purge air from the high-pressure chamber of the chain tensioner. The engine may produce a rattling noise. This indicates air still remains in the chamber and is not a matter of concern.
