READING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES



Reading the control module memory is one of the first steps in system diagnostics. This step should be initially performed to determine the general nature of the fault. Subsequent readings will determine if the fault has been cleared.

Reading codes can be performed using a suitable 16-pin Data Scan Tool (DST) or by activating the ABS system blink codes using the SCS service check connector.

To read the fault codes, connect the 16-pin DST scan tool according to the manufacturer's instructions. Follow the manufacturer's specified procedure for accessing and reading the codes.

To activate the self check ABS blink code, the vehicle must be turned OFF , not moving, SCS service connector installed, and the brake pedal released. Then proceed as follows:

  1. Block the wheels as necessary to prevent moving.
  2.  
  3. With the ignition in the OFF position, locate the SCS service check cable connection under the vehicle's dash as illustrated in Driveability and Emission Controls , and install the shunting tool, SCS Service Connector Tool No. 07PAZ-0010100 or its equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Once the SCS tool is installed, make sure the brake pedal is released, turn the ignition ON and record the ABS indicator light blinking frequency.
  6.  
  7. The ABS indicator should light for 2 seconds, then shut off for 3.6 seconds and begin to flash the stored DTCs. The ABS indicator light shuts off for 3.6 seconds between flashing each stored DTC. The DTC is a two digit code. The first digit is displayed by the ABS indicator light staying on in 1.3 second increments, then a 0.5 second pause, and the second digit flashed in 0.3 of a second increments. Hence code 32 would be displayed as three long flashes followed by two short flashes of the ABS indicator light.

  9. Turn the ignition switch OFF , clear the stored DTCs and remove the SCS connector.

Code 11: Front right wheel sensor has an open or short to the body ground or a short to power.

CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES



The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are cleared using a 16-pin Diagnostic Scan Tool (DST), a vehicle manufacturer's specific tester, or by using the shunting tool, SCS Service Connector Tool No. 07PAZ-0010100 or its equivalent.

Follow the tool manufacturer's instructions when using a 16-pin DST to erase the DTCs. To use the SCS shunting tool proceed as follows:

  1. Block the wheels as necessary to prevent moving.
  2.  
  3. With the ignition in the OFF position, locate the SCS service check cable connection under the vehicle's dash as illustrated in Driveability and Emission Controls , and install the SCS shunting tool or its equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Once the SCS tool is installed, press and hold the brake pedal, then turn the ignition ON while holding the brake pedal pressed.
  6.  
  7. The ABS indicator should light for 2 seconds, then shut off, then the brake pedal is released.
  8.  
  9. The ABS indicator lights again within 4 seconds, when the indicator light comes on, press and hold the brake pedal until the light goes out, then release the brake pedal.
  10.  
  11. If the ABS indicator shuts off for 4 seconds, then quickly blinks 2 times, the DTCs are erased.
  12.  
  13. Turn the ignition switch OFF , remove the SCS connector.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check that the ABS indicator lamp goes out. Test drive the vehicle to allow the ABS system to perform a dynamic check.
  16.  
  17. If the ABS indicator light comes on while operating the vehicle, recheck the DTCs, diagnose and repair as necessary.
