Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



3.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove radiator fan.
  4.  
  5. Remove accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove damper using Special Tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller or equivalent.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Align crankshaft damper slot with key in crankshaft. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 8512-A or equivalent, press damper onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten crankshaft damper bolt to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install radiator fan.
  8.  
  9. Install accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Connect negative cable.
  12.  

  1. Disconnect negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove radiator fan.
  4.  
  5. Remove accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove damper using Special Tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller or equivalent.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Align crankshaft damper slot with key in crankshaft. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 8512-A or equivalent, press damper onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten crankshaft damper bolt to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install radiator fan.
  8.  
  9. Install accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Connect negative cable.
  12.  

4.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove radiator upper hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove upper fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Using Special Tools 6958 Spanner with Adapter Pins 8346 or equivalent, loosen fan and viscous assembly from water pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove fan and viscous assembly.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect electrical connector for fan mounted inside radiator shroud.
    NOTE
    Transmission cooler line snaps into shroud lower right hand corner.

  16.  
  17. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove damper using Special Tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller or equivalent.

To install:

  1. Align crankshaft damper slot with key in crankshaft. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 8512-A or equivalent, press damper onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten crankshaft damper bolt to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install fan blade assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install radiator upper shroud and tighten fasteners to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Connect electrical connector for shroud fan.
  12.  
  13. Install radiator upper hose.
  14.  
  15. Install accessory drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Refill cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Connect negative cable.
  20.  

  1. Disconnect negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove radiator upper hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove upper fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Using Special Tools 6958 Spanner with Adapter Pins 8346 or equivalent, loosen fan and viscous assembly from water pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove fan and viscous assembly.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect electrical connector for fan mounted inside radiator shroud.
    NOTE
    Transmission cooler line snaps into shroud lower right hand corner.

  16.  
  17. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove damper using Special Tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller or equivalent.

To install:

  1. Align crankshaft damper slot with key in crankshaft. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 8512-A or equivalent, press damper onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten crankshaft damper bolt to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install fan blade assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install radiator upper shroud and tighten fasteners to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Connect electrical connector for shroud fan.
  12.  
  13. Install radiator upper hose.
  14.  
  15. Install accessory drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Refill cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Connect negative cable.
  20.  

5.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove radiator upper hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove damper using Special Tools 8513A Insert and 1023 Three Jaw Puller or equivalent.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 8512-A or equivalent, press damper onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install then tighten crankshaft damper bolt to 176 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install fan blade assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install radiator upper shroud and tighten fasteners to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install radiator upper hose.
  12.  
  13. Install accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Refill cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Connect negative cable.
  18.  

  1. Disconnect negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove radiator upper hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove damper using Special Tools 8513A Insert and 1023 Three Jaw Puller or equivalent.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 8512-A or equivalent, press damper onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install then tighten crankshaft damper bolt to 176 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install fan blade assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install radiator upper shroud and tighten fasteners to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install radiator upper hose.
  12.  
  13. Install accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Refill cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Connect negative cable.
  18.  

5.9L Engine
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cooling system fan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove vibration damper bolt and washer from end of crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Position Special Tool 8513 Insert or equivalent into the crankshaft nose.
  10.  
  11. Install Special Tool 1026 Three Jaw Puller or equivalent onto the vibration damper.
  12.  
  13. Pull vibration damper off crankshaft.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Position the vibration damper onto the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Place installing tool, part of Puller Tool Set C-3688 or equivalent in position and press the vibration damper onto the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft bolt and washer. Tighten the bolt to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.) torque.
  6.  
  7. Install the accessory drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Position the fan shroud and install the bolts. Tighten the retainer bolts to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.) torque.
  10.  
  11. Install the cooling fan.
  12.  
  13. Connect the battery negative cable.
  14.
