Removal & Installation



3.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Discharge the A/C system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Release the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the battery.
  12.  
  13. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the viscous fan.
  16.  
  17. Remove the A/C compressor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the generator and secure away from engine.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the phenolic pulley from the P/S pump. It is not required for P/S pump removal.

  20.  
  21. Remove the power steering pump with lines attached and secure away from engine.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the heater hoses from heater core and remove hose assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the upper radiator hose from engine.
  28.  
  29. Remove the lower radiator hose from engine.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the power steering cooler lines.
  34.  
  35. Remove the radiator assembly.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the throttle and speed control cables.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the engine to body ground straps at the left side of cowl.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the engine wiring harness at the following points:

    Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs
     
    Crankshaft Position Sensor
     

  42.  
  43. Remove the coil over plugs.
  44.  
  45. Remove fuel rail and secure away from engine.
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to release the quick connect fitting from the fuel supply line for engine removal.

  47. Remove the PCV hose.
  48.  
  49. Remove the breather hoses.
  50.  
  51. Remove the vacuum hose for the power brake booster.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the knock sensors.
  54.  
  55. Remove the engine oil dipstick tube.
  56.  
  57. Remove intake manifold.
  58.  
  59. Install an engine lifting fixture, Tool 8247, using the original fasteners from the removed intake manifold, and fuel rail.

  61. Raise the vehicle on hoist.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect the exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.
  64.  
  65. On 4wd vehicles disconnect axle vent tube from left side engine mount.
  66.  
  67. Remove the through bolt retaining nut and bolt from both the left and right side engine mounts.
  68.  
  69. On 4wd vehicles Remove locknut from left and right side engine mount brackets.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect two ground straps from the lower left hand side and one ground strap from the lower right hand side of the engine.
  72.  
  73. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor.
    NOTE
    The following step applies to 4wd vehicles equipped with automatic transmission only.

  75. On 4wd vehicles, remove the axle isolator bracket from the engine, transmission and the axle.
  76.  
  77. Remove the structural cover.
  78.  
  79. Remove the starter.
  80.  
  81. Remove the torque converter bolts (automatic transmission only).
  82.  
  83. Remove the transmission to engine mounting bolts.
  84.  
  85. Disconnect the engine block heater power cable from the block heater, if equipped.
  86.  
  87. Lower the vehicle.
  88.  
  89. Remove throttle body resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  90.  
  91. Disconnect throttle and speed control cables.
  92.  
  93. Disconnect the tube from both the left and right side crankcase breathers. Remove the breathers.
  94.  
  95. Remove the generator.
  96.  
  97. Disconnect the two heater hoses from the timing chain cover and heater core.
  98.  
  99. Unclip and remove the heater hoses and tubes from the intake manifold.
  100.  
  101. Disconnect engine harness at the following points:

    Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs

  103. Disconnect the vacuum lines at the throttle body and intake manifold.
  104.  
  105. Remove power steering pump and position out of the way.
  106.  
  107. Disconnect body ground strap at the right side cowl.
  108.  
  109. Disconnect body ground strap at the left side cowl.
    NOTE
    It will be necessary to support the transmission in order to remove the engine.

  111. Position a suitable jack under the transmission.
  112.  
  113. Remove engine from the vehicle.
  114.  

To install:

  1. Position engine in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Position both the left and right side engine mount brackets and install the through bolts and nuts. Tighten nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) on 2wd vehicles; 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm) on 4wd vehicles.
  4.  
  5. On 4wd vehicles, install locknuts onto the engine mount brackets. Tighten locknuts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
  6.  
  7. Remove jack from under the transmission.
  8.  
  9. Remove Engine Lifting Fixture Special Tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove Special Tools 8400 Lifting Studs.
  12.  
  13. Position generator wiring behind the oil dipstick tube, then install the oil dipstick tube upper mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Connect both left and right side body ground straps.
  16.  
  17. Install power steering pump.
  18.  
  19. Connect fuel supply line quick connect fitting.
  20.  
  21. Connect the vacuum lines at the throttle body and intake manifold.
  22.  
  23. Connect engine harness at the following points:

    Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs
     

  24.  
  25. Position and install heater hoses and tubes (1) onto intake manifold.
  26.  
  27. Install the heater hoses onto the heater core and the engine front cover.
  28.  
  29. Install generator.
  30.  
  31. Install radiator assembly.
  32.  
  33. Connect radiator upper and lower hoses.
  34.  
  35. Connect power steering cooler lines.
  36.  
  37. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the radiator.
  38.  
  39. Install accessory drive belt.
  40.  
  41. Install A/C compressor.
  42.  
  43. Install both breathers. Connect tube to both crankcase breathers.
  44.  
  45. Connect throttle and speed control cables.
  46.  
  47. Install throttle body resonator assembly and air inlet hose. Tighten clamps 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.).
  48.  
  49. Raise vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Install transmission to engine mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
  52.  
  53. Install torque converter bolts (Automatic Transmission Only).
  54.  
  55. Connect crankshaft position sensor.
  56.  
  57. On 4wd vehicles, position and install the axle isolator bracket onto the axle, transmission and engine block. Tighten bolts to specification.
  58.  
  59. Install starter.
    CAUTION
    The structural cover requires a specific torque sequence. Failure to follow this sequence may cause severe damage to the cover.

  61. Install structural cover.
  62.  
  63. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
  64.  
  65. Install engine block heater power cable, if equipped.
  66.  
  67. On 4wd vehicles, connect axle vent tube to left side engine mount.
  68.  
  69. Lower vehicle.
  70.  
  71. Check and fill engine oil.
  72.  
  73. Recharge the A/C system.
  74.  
  75. Refill the engine cooling system.
  76.  
  77. Install the battery tray and battery.
  78.  
  79. Connect the battery positive and negative cables.
  80.  
  81. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  82.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Discharge the A/C system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Release the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the battery.
  12.  
  13. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the viscous fan.
  16.  
  17. Remove the A/C compressor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the generator and secure away from engine.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the phenolic pulley from the P/S pump. It is not required for P/S pump removal.

  21. Remove the power steering pump with lines attached and secure away from engine.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the heater hoses from heater core and remove hose assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the upper radiator hose from engine.
  28.  
  29. Remove the lower radiator hose from engine.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the power steering cooler lines.
  34.  
  35. Remove the radiator assembly.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the throttle and speed control cables.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the engine to body ground straps at the left side of cowl.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the engine wiring harness at the following points:

    Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs
     
    Crankshaft Position Sensor

  43. Remove the coil over plugs.
  44.  
  45. Remove fuel rail and secure away from engine.
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to release the quick connect fitting from the fuel supply line for engine removal.

  47. Remove the PCV hose.
  48.  
  49. Remove the breather hoses.
  50.  
  51. Remove the vacuum hose for the power brake booster.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the knock sensors.
  54.  
  55. Remove the engine oil dipstick tube.
  56.  
  57. Remove intake manifold.
  58.  
  59. Install an engine lifting fixture, Tool 8247, using the original fasteners from the removed intake manifold, and fuel rail.

  61. Raise the vehicle on hoist.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect the exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.

  65. On 4WD vehicles disconnect axle vent tube from left side engine mount.
  66.  
  67. Remove the through bolt retaining nut and bolt from both the left and right side engine mounts.
  68.  
  69. On 4WD vehicles Remove locknut from left and right side engine mount brackets.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect two ground straps from the lower left hand side and one ground strap from the lower right hand side of the engine.
  72.  
  73. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor.
    NOTE
    The following step applies to 4WD vehicles equipped with automatic transmission only.

  75. On 4WD vehicles, remove the axle isolator bracket from the engine, transmission and the axle.
  76.  
  77. Remove the structural cover.
  78.  
  79. Remove the starter.
  80.  
  81. Remove the torque converter bolts (automatic transmission only).
  82.  
  83. Remove the transmission to engine mounting bolts.
  84.  
  85. Disconnect the engine block heater power cable from the block heater, if equipped.
  86.  
  87. Lower the vehicle.
  88.  
  89. Remove throttle body resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  90.  
  91. Disconnect throttle and speed control cables.
  92.  
  93. Disconnect the tube from both the left and right side crankcase breathers. Remove the breathers.
  94.  
  95. Remove the generator.
  96.  
  97. Disconnect the two heater hoses from the timing chain cover and heater core.
  98.  
  99. Unclip and remove the heater hoses and tubes from the intake manifold.
  100.  
  101. Disconnect engine harness at the following points:

    Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs

  103. Disconnect the vacuum lines at the throttle body and intake manifold.

  105. Remove power steering pump and position out of the way.
  106.  
  107. Disconnect body ground strap at the right side cowl.
  108.  
  109. Disconnect body ground strap at the left side cowl.
    NOTE
    It will be necessary to support the transmission in order to remove the engine.

  111. Position a suitable jack under the transmission.
  112.  
  113. Remove engine from the vehicle.
  114.  

To install:

  1. Position engine in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Position both the left and right side engine mount brackets and install the through bolts and nuts. Tighten nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) on 2WD vehicles; 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm) on 4WD vehicles.
  4.  
  5. On 4WD vehicles, install locknuts onto the engine mount brackets. Tighten locknuts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove jack from under the transmission.
  8.  
  9. Remove Engine Lifting Fixture Special Tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove Special Tools 8400 Lifting Studs.
  12.  
  13. Position generator wiring behind the oil dipstick tube, then install the oil dipstick tube upper mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Connect both left and right side body ground straps.
  16.  
  17. Install power steering pump.
  18.  
  19. Connect fuel supply line quick connect fitting.
  20.  
  21. Connect the vacuum lines at the throttle body and intake manifold.
  22.  
  23. Connect engine harness at the following points:

    Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs
     

  24.  
  25. Position and install heater hoses and tubes (1) onto intake manifold.

  49. Raise vehicle.

  51. Install transmission to engine mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).

  53. Install torque converter bolts (Automatic Transmission Only).
  54.  
  55. Connect crankshaft position sensor.
  56.  
  57. On 4WD vehicles, position and install the axle isolator bracket onto the axle, transmission and engine block. Tighten bolts to specification.

  79. Connect the battery positive and negative cables.

  81. Start the engine and check for leaks.

4.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system and engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Exhaust crossover pipe
     
    On 4wd, the axle vent tube
     
    Left and right engine mount through bolts
     
    On 4wd, the left and right engine mount bracket locknuts
     
    Ground straps
     
    CKP sensor
     
    On 4wd, the axle isolator bracket
     
    Structural cover
     
    Starter
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Transmission-to-engine bolts
     
    Engine block heater
     
    Resonator and air inlet
     
    Throttle and speed control cables
     
    Crankcase breathers
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Shroud and fan assemblies
     
    Transmission cooler lines
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Radiator
     
    Alternator

  7. Install lifting eyes and take up the weight of the engine with a crane.
  8.  
  9. Support the transmission with a jack.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following:
    NOTE
    The structural cover has a specific torque sequence.



    Left and right engine mount through bolts: 2wd 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm); 4wd 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm)
     
    On 4wd, the bracket locknuts: 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    Transmission-to-engine bolts: 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)

5.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     
    Air cleaner and resonator
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Engine fan
     
    Radiator
     
    Upper crossmember and top core support
     
    A/C compressor, if equipped
     
    Alternator
     
    Intake manifold and IAFM as an assembly
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Fuel line
     
    Engine front mount thru-bolt nuts
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines, if equipped
     
    Exhaust pipes at the manifolds
     
    Starter motor
     
    Structural dust cover and transmission inspection cover
     
    Torque converter-to-flexplate bolts
     
    Transmission flange bolts. Support the transmission.
     
    Engine
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine. Tighten the engine mount thru-bolt finger tight.
     
    Transmission flange bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40-45 ft. lbs. (54-61 Nm). Then, tighten the mount bolt nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines, if equipped
     
    Torque converter, if equipped. Tighten the bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
     
    Structural dust cover and transmission inspection cover
     
    Starter motor
     
    Fuel line
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Intake manifold and IAFM as an assembly
     
    Alternator
     
    A/C compressor, if equipped
     
    Upper crossmember and top core support
     
    Radiator
     
    Engine fan
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air cleaner and resonator
     
    Hood
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  4.  
  5. Fill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission oil cooler lines, if equipped
     
    Exhaust pipes at the manifolds
     
    Starter motor
     
    Structural dust cover and transmission inspection cover
     
    Torque converter-to-flexplate bolts
     
    Transmission flange bolts. Support the transmission.
     
    Engine
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine. Tighten the engine mount thru-bolt finger tight.
     
    Transmission flange bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40-45 ft. lbs. (54-61 Nm). Then, tighten the mount bolt nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines, if equipped
     
    Torque converter, if equipped. Tighten the bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
     
    Structural dust cover and transmission inspection cover
     
    Starter motor
     
    Fuel line
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Intake manifold and IAFM as an assembly
     
    Alternator
     
    A/C compressor, if equipped
     
    Upper crossmember and top core support
     
    Radiator
     
    Engine fan
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air cleaner and resonator
     
    Hood
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.

  5. Fill the cooling system.

  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.

5.9L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Do not lift the engine by the intake manifold. Damage to the manifold may result.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine. Tighten the engine mount bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
     
    Transmission flange bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40-45 ft. lbs. (54-61 Nm).
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines, if equipped
     
    Torque converter, if equipped. Tighten the bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
     
    Starter motor
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Fuel line
     
    Engine block heater, if equipped
     
    Engine control sensor harness connectors
     
    A/C compressor, if equipped
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Intake manifold vacuum lines
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Transmission cable, if equipped
     
    Cruise control cable, if equipped
     
    Accelerator cable

  3. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.

  5. Fill the cooling system.

  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
