Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



3.7L & 4.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Thread Oil Seal Remover 8506 into the rear main seal as far as possible and remove the rear main seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal Guide 8349-2 onto the crankshaft
     
    Rear main seal on the seal guide
     
    Rear main seal, using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer 8349 and Driver Handle C-4171; tap it into place until the installer is flush with the cylinder block
     
    Flexplate. Tighten the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) for 2004 3.7L and all 4.7L; 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) for 5.7L and 2005 3.7L engine.
     
    Transmission

  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Thread Oil Seal Remover 8506 into the rear main seal as far as possible and remove the rear main seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal Guide 8349-2 onto the crankshaft
     
    Rear main seal on the seal guide
     
    Rear main seal, using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer 8349 and Driver Handle C-4171; tap it into place until the installer is flush with the cylinder block
     
    Flexplate. Tighten the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) for 4.7L; 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) for the 3.7L engine.
     
    Transmission

  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  

5.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flexplate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear oil seal retainer mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Carefully remove the retainer from the engine block.
  14.  
  15. Using a seal puller, remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  16.  

To install:

NOTE
The rear seal must be installed dry for proper operation. Do not lubricate the seal lip or outer edge.

  1. Position the plastic seal guide onto the crankshaft rear face. Then position the crankshaft rear oil seal onto the guide.
  2.  
  3. Using a seal driver and hammer, tap the seal into place. Continue to tap on the driver handle until the seal installer seats against the cylinder block crankshaft bore.
  4.  
  5. Thoroughly clean all gasket residue from the engine block.
  6.  
  7. Use extreme care and clean all gasket residue from the retainer.
  8.  
  9. Position the gasket onto the retainer.
  10.  
  11. Position the retainer onto the engine block.
  12.  
  13. Install the retainer mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 15 Nm (132 inch lbs.) using the procedure shown.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Install the flexplate.
  18.  
  19. Install the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Check and verify engine oil level.
  22.  
  23. Start engine and check for leaks.
  24.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flexplate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear oil seal retainer mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Carefully remove the retainer from the engine block.
  14.  
  15. Using a seal puller, remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  16.  

To install:

NOTE
The rear seal must be installed dry for proper operation. Do not lubricate the seal lip or outer edge.

  1. Position the plastic seal guide onto the crankshaft rear face. Then position the crankshaft rear oil seal onto the guide.

  3. Using a seal driver and hammer, tap the seal into place. Continue to tap on the driver handle until the seal installer seats against the cylinder block crankshaft bore.

  5. Thoroughly clean all gasket residue from the engine block.
  6.  
  7. Use extreme care and clean all gasket residue from the retainer.
  8.  
  9. Position the gasket onto the retainer.
  10.  
  11. Position the retainer onto the engine block.
  12.  
  13. Install the retainer mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 132 inch lbs. (15 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Install the flexplate. Tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Check and verify engine oil level.
  22.  
  23. Start engine and check for leaks.
  24.  

5.9L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump
     
    Rear main bearing cap
     

  6.  
  7. Loosen the other main bearing cap bolts for clearance and remove the rear main seal halves.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New upper seal half to the cylinder block
     
    New lower seal half to the bearing cap
     

  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the rear main bearing cap.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rear main bearing cap. Tighten all main bearing cap bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Oil pump and oil pan
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.
