Knuckles

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front halfshaft nut (4X4 only).
  8.  
  9. Remove the tie rod end nut. Separate the tie rod from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the ball joint seal.

  10.  
  11. Remove the upper ball joint nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent.
  12.  
  13. Install a hydraulic jack to support the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent and remove the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub/bearing bolts from the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hub/bearing from the steering knuckle
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering knuckle.
  22.  

To install:


WARNING
The ball joint stud tapers must be CLEAN and DRY before installing the knuckle. Clean the stud tapers with mineral spirits to remove dirt and grease.

  1. Install the hub/bearing to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
  2.  
  3. Install the knuckle onto the upper and lower ball joints.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the hydraulic jack from the lower suspension arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the tie rod end and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the front halfshaft into the hub/bearing (4X4 only).
  14.  
  15. Install the halfshaft nut and tighten to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm) (4X4 only).
  16.  
  17. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped and brake shield, rotor and caliper.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel
  20.  
  21. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Perform a wheel alignment.
  24.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front halfshaft nut (4WD only).
  8.  
  9. Remove the tie rod end nut. Separate the tie rod from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the ball joint seal.

  10.  
  11. Remove the upper ball joint nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent.
  12.  
  13. Install a hydraulic jack to support the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover 8677 or equivalent and remove the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub/bearing bolts from the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hub/bearing from the steering knuckle
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering knuckle.
  22.  

To install:


WARNING

  1. Install the hub/bearing to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 120 ft. lbs. (163 Nm).

  3. Install the knuckle onto the upper and lower ball joints.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower ball joint nut. Tighten the nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the hydraulic jack from the lower suspension arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the tie rod end and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the front halfshaft into the hub/bearing (4WD only).
  14.  
  15. Install the halfshaft nut and tighten to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm) (4X4 only).
  16.  
  17. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor if equipped and brake shield, rotor and caliper.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel
  20.  
  21. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Perform a wheel alignment.
  24.
