Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor at the wheel well.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front halfshaft nut on 4WD models.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper ball joint nut. Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Unload the torsion bar using special tool 8686 (1).
  24.  
  25. Remove the torsion bar from the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  28.  
  29. Remove the shock absorber lower bolt.
  30.  
  31. Remove the front and rear pivot bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower control arm at the frame rail brackets. Install the pivot bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts finger-tight.
    NOTE
    The ball joint stud taper must be CLEAN and DRY before installing the knuckle. Clean the stud taper with mineral spirits to remove dirt and grease.

  3. Install the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Insert the lower ball joint into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the torsion bar.
  8.  
  9. Install shock absorber lower bolt and tighten to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the front halfshaft nut (4WD models).
  12.  
  13. Insert the upper ball joint into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the stabilizer bar link and tighten to 125 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the lower control arm pivot nut and bolts to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Insert the outer tie rod end into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the disc brake rotor.
  22.  
  23. Install the disc brake caliper and adapter assembly and tighten to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Adjust the front suspension height and perform a wheel alignment.
  30.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nut from upper ball joint.
  8.  
  9. Separate upper ball joint from the steering knuckle with a ball joint tool.
    NOTE
    When installing the remover to separate the ball joint, be careful not to damage the ball joint seal.

  10.  
  11. Remove the control arm pivot bolts and remove control arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Position the control arm into the frame brackets. Install bolts and tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Insert ball joint in steering knuckle and tighten ball joint nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the support and lower vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Perform a wheel alignment.
  10.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor at the wheel well.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front halfshaft nut (4wd).
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper ball joint nut. Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Unload the torsion bar using special tool 8686 (1).
  24.  
  25. Remove the torsion bar from the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  28.  
  29. Remove the shock absorber lower bolt.
  30.  
  31. Remove the front and rear pivot bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower control arm at the frame rail brackets. Install the pivot bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts finger-tight.

  3. Install the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Insert the lower ball joint into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Install the torsion bar.
  8.  
  9. Install shock absorber lower bolt and tighten to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install the front halfshaft nut (4wd).
  12.  
  13. Insert the upper ball joint into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the stabilizer bar link and tighten to 169 Nm (125 ft. lbs.).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the lower control arm pivot nut and bolts to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.).
  18.  
  19. Insert the outer tie rod end into the steering knuckle (1). Install and tighten the retaining nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the disc brake rotor.
  22.  
  23. Install the disc brake caliper and adaptor assembly and tighten to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
  24.  
  25. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Adjust the front suspension height and perform a wheel alignment.
  30.
