Wheel Speed Sensors

Print

NOTE
These vehicles use three speed sensors. Each front wheel has a speed sensor mounted to the wheel hub and the signal for the rear wheel comes from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted to the transmission tail housing (2WD) or to the transfer case (4WD).

Removal & Installation

NOTE
The signal for the rear wheel comes from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted to the transmission tail housing (2WD) or to the transfer case (4WD).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the bolt and sensor by pulling the sensor from the transmission or transfer case housing.
    1. Fluid will drip out of the opening, so be ready to catch the spillage.

To install:

  1. Install a new O-ring on the vehicle speed sensor and coat with transmission fluid.
  2.
  3. Install the sensor, bolts and torque to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable and check transaxle or transmission fluid level.
  8.

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    CAUTION
Some brake pads contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

  6.
  7. Remove the brake caliper, hub and rotor.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  10.
  11. Remove the splash shield with the sensor from the steering knuckle.
