Removal & Installation

CAUTION
The ignition system generates high voltage. Personal injury could result from contact with this system.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the wiring connectors at the coil.
  4.
  5. Remove the coil wire.
  6.
  7. Remove the studs holding the coil bracket and the coil to the manifold.
  8.
  9. Remove the coil bracket and the coil.
  10.
  11. Drill and punch out the two rivets holding the coil to the bracket.
  12.
  13. Remove the coil from the bracket.
  14.

To install:

  1. A replacement coil kit comes with two screws in order to attach the coil to the bracket.
  2.
  3. Install the coil to the bracket with the two screws.
  4.
  5. Install the coil and the bracket to the intake manifold with studs.
    1. Tighten the ignition coil hold-down studs to 71 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
    2.

  6.
  7. Install the coil wire.
  8.
  9. Install the wiring connectors.
  10.

Testing

For this procedure, the ignition coil may be removed from the engine or simply remove the electrical connectors and test it on the engine.

  1. Using an ohmmeter (on the high scale), connect the probes between the primary (low voltage) terminal and coil ground; the reading should be very high or infinity, if not, replace the coil.
  2.
  3. Using an ohmmeter (on the low scale), connect the probes between both primary (low voltage) terminals; the reading should be very low or zero, if not, replace the coil.
  4.
  5. Using an ohmmeter (on the high scale), connect the probes between a primary (low voltage) terminal and the secondary (high voltage) terminal; the reading should be high (not infinite), if not, replace the coil.
  6.
