Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



Please note that the transmission assembly and transfer case, if equipped, must be removed to perform this procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove transfer case, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove transmission.
  8.  
  9. Remove clutch assembly/flywheel or flexplate.

  11. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal by inserting a suitable prying tool into the notches provided in the seal retainer and prying the seal out. Take care not to damage the crankshaft sealing surface.

To install:

  1. Inspect the crankshaft for grit, rust or burrs and correct as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Clean the running surface of the crankshaft with a non-abrasive cleaner.
  4.  
  5. Install new rear seal lubricated with engine oil and a seal installer.
  6.  
  7. Install flywheel and clutch or flexplate.
  8.  
  9. Install transmission.
  10.  
  11. Install transfer case, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Connect negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and verify no oil leaks.
