Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor

Operation



The Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor detects the RPM and the reference marks. Without an engine speed signal, the engine will not start. If the engine speed signal fails while the engine is running, the engine will stop immediately.

The Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor detects the RPM and the reference marks. Without an engine speed signal, the engine will not start. If the engine speed signal fails while the engine is running, the engine will stop immediately.

Use only gold-plated terminals when servicing terminals in harness connector of Camshaft Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor.

  1. Disconnect the gray 3-pin harness connector (5) to the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor.

  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 3 on connector (B) to Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor using multimeter and adapter cables from a connector test kit.

  5. Specified value: 730 to 1000 ohms (at approx. 20 degrees C)
  6.  
  7. Check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor for short circuit between terminals 1 and 2 as well as 1 and 3.
  8.  
  9. Specified value: infinite ohms
  10.  
  11. If the resistance is not okay, replace the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor.
  12.  
  13. If the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor is okay, connect test box to wiring harness of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM).
  14.  
  15. Check the wires between the test box and the 3-pin connector for an open circuit.

    Terminal 1 and socket 52
     
    Terminal 2 and socket 51
     
    Terminal 3 and socket 36
     

  16.  
  17. Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
  18.  
  19. Check the wires for short circuit to each other, to Battery (+) and Ground (GND).
  20.  
  21. Specified value: infinite ohms

Use only gold-plated terminals when servicing terminals in harness connector of Camshaft Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor.

  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 3 on connector (B) to Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor using multimeter and adapter cables from a connector test kit.

  5. Specified value: 730 to 1000 ohms (at approx. 20 degrees C)
  6.  
  7. Check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor for short circuit between terminals 1 and 2 as well as 1 and 3.
  8.  
  9. Specified value: infinite ohms
  10.  
  11. If the resistance is not okay, replace the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor.
  12.  
  13. If the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor is okay, connect test box to wiring harness of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM).
  14.  
  15. Check the wires between the test box and the 3-pin connector for an open circuit.

    Terminal 1 and socket 52
     
    Terminal 2 and socket 51
     
    Terminal 3 and socket 36
     

  16.  
  17. Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
  18.  
  19. Check the wires for short circuit to each other, to Battery (+) and Ground (GND).
  20.  
  21. Specified value: infinite ohms

  7. Check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor for short circuit between terminals 1 and 2 as well as 1 and 3.

  11. If the resistance is not okay, replace the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor.

  13. If the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor is okay, connect test box to wiring harness of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM).
