Removal & Installation



4.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Exhaust camshaft intermediate flange and rear-most bearing cap for camshaft position sensor housing
     
    Exhaust camshaft bearing cap in front of drive chain, and bearing caps 2 and 3
     
    Exhaust camshaft bearing caps 1 and 4, alternating in diagonal sequence
     
    Intake camshaft bearing cap 6 and 7
     
    Intake camshaft bearing caps 5 and 8, alternating in diagonal sequence
     
    Intake and exhaust camshafts
     
    Hydraulic valve lifters

NOTE
Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.

  1. Install the hydraulic valve lifters in their original positions.
  2.  
  3. Install camshafts with drive chain so that markings on sprockets are aligned with each other (arrows).
  4.  


NOTE
When installing the bearing caps, make sure that the stamped numbers appear upright when viewed from the intake side.


NOTE
The contact surface of both outer bearing caps should be coated lightly with AMV 174 003 01.

  1. Install the intake camshaft bearing caps as follows:
    1. Step 1: Tighten bearing caps 5 and 8 evenly, alternating in diagonal sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Tighten the remaining bearing caps to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

  3. Install the exhaust camshaft bearing caps as follows:
    1. Step 1: Tighten bearing caps 1 and 4 evenly, alternating in diagonal sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Tighten the remaining bearing caps to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    4.

  5. Install the camshaft sprockets and tighten the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  6.  
  7. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Exhaust camshaft intermediate flange and rear-most bearing cap for camshaft position sensor housing
     
    Exhaust camshaft bearing cap in front of drive chain, and bearing caps 2 and 3
     
    Exhaust camshaft bearing caps 1 and 4, alternating in diagonal sequence
     
    Intake camshaft bearing cap 6 and 7
     
    Intake camshaft bearing caps 5 and 8, alternating in diagonal sequence
     
    Intake and exhaust camshafts
     
    Hydraulic valve lifters

  1. Install the hydraulic valve lifters in their original positions.

  9. Install the camshaft sprockets and tighten the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

  11. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
