Removal & Installation



To access the rear main oil seal requires the transmission to be removed to access the rear portion of the engine. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Drive Train, Manual Transaxle, Automatic Transaxle.

The rear main oil seal is located at the rear of the engine block. It can be found in a housing or flange behind the flywheel/flexplate. To replace the seal, remove the transaxle or remove the entire drive train assembly and then remove the transaxle.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel/flexplate assembly.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable tool, pry the old seal out of its housing.
  8.

To install :

  1. Lightly oil the inner lips of the replacement seal and press it into place.
  2.  


NOTE
Be careful not to damage the seal or score the crankshaft.

  1. Install the flywheel/flexplate and the transaxle.
  2.  
  3. The balance of assembly is in reverse order of removal.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transaxle
     
    Oil pan if needed to access seal
     
    Flywheel/flexplate assembly
     
    Oil seal by prying it out of the housing.
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the seal or score the crankshaft.



    New oil seal by coating it with engine oil and press it into place
     



    Flywheel/flexplate
     
    Oil pan if removed
     
    Transaxle
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flexplate from the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Use extraction hook 10-221 and spacer, approx. 6 mm (1/4 in.) thick, and pry out oil seal.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Using tool 2003 and drive plate mounting bolts, press in oil seal until fully seated.
  2.  
  3. Install the flexplate. Tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. Plus 90 degrees.
  4.  
  5. Install the transaxle to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.
