Wheel Bearings

On all vehicles covered by this manual, the front wheel bearings are sealed units, and lubrication is not possible.

Adjustment



The front wheel bearings are sealed and no adjustment is necessary or possible. If the bearings are found to be loose or noisy, they must be replaced.

Removal & Installation




NOTE
If either the hub or the wheel bearing are removed, the wheel bearing must be replaced.

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bearing housing (knuckle) from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove any installed shields and/or brackets as necessary.
  6.  
  7. Place the bearing housing (knuckle) onto suitable press plates in a hydraulic press making sure the housing is completely level, and press the wheel hub out of the bearing housing (knuckle).
  8.  
  9. On 1990-97 Passat models, using a sturdy and suitable snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the bearing housing (knuckle).
  10.  
  11. Support the bearing housing (knuckle) on suitable press plates and press the bearing out off the housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inner race of the wheel bearing from the hub using a suitable and sturdy puller, such as KUKKO® Tool No. 240-1. If necessary, wedge the bearing race upward slightly by wedging a chisel between the bearing and a hub alternately from side-to-side. Once the bearing race is removed, if necessary, dress the area on the hub with a suitable flat-faced file.

To install:

  1. Thoroughly inspect the bearing housing (knuckle) and the hub and remove any burrs. If necessary, slightly chamfer the outer perimeter of the housing.
  2.  
  3. Place the bearing housing (knuckle) on suitable press plates in a hydraulic press.
  4.  
  5. While supporting the bearing housing, press the bearing into the housing.
  6.  
  7. On 1990-97 Passat models;
  8.  
    1. Install a new snap ring.
    2.  
    3. If the hub is being replaced, make sure to install the tone ring for the ABS brake system BEFORE pressing the hub into the bearing.
    4.  

  9. Support the inner bearing race of the wheel bearing, and press the hub into the bearing until it is fully seated.
  10.  
  11. The balance of installation is in reverse order of removal.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the halfshaft retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the caliper bracket mounting bolts, then the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake splash guard.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the mounting nuts for the lower guide and track links.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the tie rod end from the wheel bearing housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the mounting nuts for the lower guide and track links and press out the joints.
  20.  
  21. Remove the upper control arm pinchbolt and disconnect the arms.
  22.  
  23. Remove the wheel bearing housing.
  24.  
  25. Place the wheel bearing housing on a press.
  26.  
  27. Drive out the hub with the wheel bearing.
  28.  
  29. Using a bearing separator and press, drive hub out of the bearing.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Press the new wheel bearing into the bearing housing using the appropriate bearing driver.
  2.  
  3. Press the hub into the wheel bearing using the appropriate bearing driver.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel bearing housing.
  6.  
  7. Slide the CV-joint through the wheel hub and hand tighten the new nut.
  8.  
  9. Connect the lower track control and guide link, then tighten the new self-locking nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install both of the upper link ball joints into the wheel bearing and tighten the pinchbolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the tie rod end and tighten the new self-locking nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), then the bolt to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake splash guard and tighten the retaining bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the brake rotor.
  20.  
  21. Install the brake caliper and tighten the retaining bolt to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the wheels and the lug bolts to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Tighten the halfshaft retaining bolt as follows:

    M14 bolt: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) plus 1 / 2 turn (180°)
     
    M16 bolt: 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm) plus 1 / 2 turn (180°)

  27. Check the front suspension alignment, if necessary, adjust.
  28.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the halfshaft retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel, then reinstall all 5 wheel bolts at this time
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor
     
    Caliper (suspend by wire to body)
     
    Rotor
     
    Backing plate bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Pull ABS wheel speed sensor from wheel bearing housing
  8.  
  9. Loosen the mounting nuts for the lower guide and track links.
  10.  
  11. Remove ABS cable grommet and clips and feed the cable through the opening.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tie rod end from the wheel bearing housing (use care to not damage the CV joint boot).
  14.  
  15. Remove the mounting nuts for the lower guide and track links and press out the joints
    NOTE
    If equipped with self-leveling control (for headlight aiming), disconnect or remove actuating arm.

  16.  
  17. Remove the upper mounting nuts for the wheel bearing housing and lift out both links. Swing the wheel bearing housing toward the rear while pulling the drive axle end out of the wheel hub.
  18.  
  19. Unscrew the nut from the joint bolt of the track control link and remove the wheel bearing housing.
  20.  
  21. Place the wheel bearing housing on a press.
  22.  
  23. Drive out the hub with the wheel bearing.
  24.  
  25. Using a bearing separator and press, drive hub out of the bearing.
  26.

  1. Press the new wheel bearing into the bearing housing using the appropriate bearing driver.
  2.  
  3. Press the hub into the wheel bearing using the appropriate bearing driver.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    CV-joint by sliding it through the wheel hub and hand-tighten the new nut
     
    Lower track control and guide link. Torque the new self-locking nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
     
    Both of the upper link ball joints into the wheel bearing. Torque the pinch bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Socket-head bolt and self-locking nut for self-leveling control arm. Torque to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end. Torque the new self-locking nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the bolt to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    ABS wheel speed sensor
     
    Brake splash guard. Torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Bake caliper. Torque the bolt to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Tighten the halfshaft retaining bolt as follows:

    M14 bolt: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) plus 1 / 2 (180 degree) turn
     
    M16 bolt: 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm) plus 1 / 2 (180 degree) turn
     

  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front alignment, if necessary.
  10.
