Instrument Cluster

Removal & Installation

Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS air bag system.

The steering column cover upper trim differs slightly between early and late production vehicles. On early production vehicles, the pleated filler trim on the top of the steering column cover, moves as the steering column is moved up or down and is guided by a removable upper trim cover.

On later production vehicles, this upper trim cover is not removable separately as the upper and lower components have been combined into one seamless unit that surrounds the steering column. Because the upper and lower portions cannot be separated, the steering wheel assembly and column switches must be removed BEFORE removal of the column cover. On these models, the column cover must be removed to allow access to the instrument cluster mounting fasteners.

Fig. On early production models, the upper steering column cover has a seam where it meets the lower cover and can be removed separately. On later production models the upper and lower covers are seamless and removed as a unit

Early Production Vehicles
  1. Adjust the steering column such that it is pulled out as far as possible and in the lowermost position.
  3. Pivot the upper steering column upward and lift off.
  5. Move the pleated cover trim outward and down to access the lower instrument cluster fasteners.
  7. Remove the lower instrument cluster fasteners.
  9. Carefully pull the instrument cluster outward and cut the cable ties on the back of the instrument cluster.
  11. Release the retaining tabs on the electrical connectors and disconnect.
  13. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Late Production Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the driver's SRS air bag assembly.
  5. Turn the steering wheel such that the wheels are straight and remove the steering wheel.
  7. From underneath the steering column cover, remove the 2 screws in the recessed holes in the lower column cover near to the steering wheel.
  9. Remove the top half of the steering column cover.
  11. Remove 4 Phillips screws and one bolt securing the lower cover to the steering column assembly.
  13. Release the steering column height adjuster and lower the steering column, then remove the lower cover.
  15. Remove the steering column electrical switch mounting bolt from the top of the switch assemblies. Then, release the lock tab at the bottom of the switches and remove the switches.
  17. Pry off the trim caps on the lower left kick panel, remove the Phillips fasteners, then release and remove the kick panel.
  19. Remove the fuse box trim cover from the left side of the dash, then remove the 2 knee bar fasteners along the sides of the fuse box.
  21. Remove the trim covers as necessary and the remaining fasteners securing the knee bar and remove the knee bar.
  23. Disconnect the headlight switch electrical connector.
  25. Slide the pleated trim up and insert the handle of a suitable screwdriver in the gap to hold the trim retracted.
  27. Remove the 2 upper and 2 outer Phillips screws and remove the steering column trim cover and screwdriver.
  29. Remove the 2 lower instrument cluster mounting screws and move the instrument cluster out and disconnect the electrical connectors and remove.
