Fig. Typical VW transmission id tag

Audi and Volkswagen transaxles, whether manual or automatic, have two sets of separate identification codes stamped onto the case. The first set of codes indicates the transmission type followed by a manufacturing code. The numerical manufacturing code consists of five numbers as follows:

Digit Positions 1, 2: Day number day of the month

Digit Positions 3, 4: Month number of the year

Digit Position 5: Last number of the year of production

Example, 22129 = the twenty second day, of the twelfth month, of 1999, or December 22, 1999

The second set of codes (found on a different portion of the transaxle) identifies gear ratios.

NOTE
As with the different vehicle platforms and engine codes, sometimes headings and/or procedures in this manual are broken down by engine or transaxle codes. Make sure that you properly identify the driveline components in your vehicle, so you can refer to the appropriate procedure and if necessary, order the correct replacement parts.
