Camshaft (Cylinder Head) Cover

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  2.  
  3. Remove the battery box cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors from the intake and exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid valves.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coils.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine harness clips from the cover.
  10.  
  11. Reposition the engine wiring harness out of the way.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fuel feed line retainers from the engine brackets.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft cover.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, tighten the cover bolts to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).

3.5L Engine
Left Side
  1. Partially drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the left side spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the spark plug wire retainer clips from the heater inlet and outlet pipe bracket and the MAP sensor bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater inlet and outlet pipe.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) foul air tube quick connect fitting from the PCV fitting.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the rocker arm cover bolts.
    NOTE
    When removing the valve rocker arm cover make sure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.

  16.  
  17. Remove the rocker arm cover. If necessary, bump the end of the cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.
  18.  
  19. Cut the room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealer in the channel where the intake, cylinder head, and rocker cover meet with a suitable tool.
  20.  
  21. Remove the rocker arm cover gasket.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arm cover gasket into the rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Apply sealer to the surfaces where the cylinder head and the intake manifold meet.
  6.  
  7. Place the rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the ignition coil assembly.
  12.  
  13. Connect the PCV foul air tube quick connect fitting to the PCV fitting.
  14.  
  15. Install the heater inlet and outlet pipe.
  16.  
  17. Engage the spark plug wire retainer clips to the heater inlet and outlet pipe bracket and the MAP sensor bracket.
  18.  
  19. Connect the left side spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
  20.  
  21. Install the intake manifold cover.
  22.  
  23. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  24.  
  25. Fill the cooling system. Bottom of Form
  26.  

Right Side
  1. Remove the alternator.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine coolant crossover pipe.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) fresh air tube from the air cleaner outlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Remove the PCV fresh air tube from the right rocker arm cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the fuel injector wiring harness electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coil assembly.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the rocker arm cover bolts.
    NOTE

  9. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the ignition coil assembly.
  12.  
  13. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the fuel injector wiring harness electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the MAP sensor.
  16.  
  17. Install the PCV fresh air tube to the right rocker arm cover.
  18.  
  19. Connect the PCV fresh air tube to the air cleaner outlet duct.
  20.  
  21. Install the engine coolant crossover pipe.
  22.  
  23. Install the alternator.
  24.  

3.6L Engine
Left Side
  1. Remove the ignition coils.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and remove the engine harness from the camshaft cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left camshaft cover bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left camshaft cover from the left cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the camshaft cover.
  12.  

To install:

To install:

  1. Install new camshaft cover bolt grommets prior to installing the camshaft cover bolts.

  3. Place a bead 0.3150 in (8mm) in diameter by 0.1575 in. (4mm) in height bead of RTV sealant on the engine front cover split lines.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the left camshaft cover bolts.

  7. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal
  8.  

Right Side
  1. Remove the ignition coils.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and remove the engine harness from the camshaft cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right camshaft cover bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right camshaft cover from the right cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the camshaft cover.
  12.  

To install:

To install:

  1. Install new camshaft cover bolt grommets prior to installing the camshaft cover bolts.

  3. Place a bead 0.3150 in (8mm) in diameter by 0.1575 in. (4mm) in height bead of RTV sealant on the engine front cover split lines.

  5. Place the right camshaft cover into position onto the right cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the right camshaft cover bolts.

  9. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal
