Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Install a crankshaft holding tool and a breaker bar to the balancer in order to prevent the balancer from rotating when loosening the balancer bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Position the crankshaft balancer.
  2.  
  3. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt.
  4.  
  5. Install the holding tool and a breaker bar to the balancer in order to prevent the balancer from rotating while tightening the bolt.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 125 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Install adjustable jack stands under the frame.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the left frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts.
  10.  
  11. Using the jack stands, lower the right side of the frame to access the crankshaft balancer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the torque converter covers.
  14.  
  15. Install the a suitable holding tool to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and the washer.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to the keyway of the crankshaft balancer.
  2.  
  3. Place the crankshaft balancer into position over the key in the crankshaft.
    NOTE
    Do NOT use a power-assisted tool with the special tool in order to remove or install this component. You cannot properly control the alignment of this component using a power-assisted tool, and this can damage the component. Install a balancer and crankshaft sprocket installer onto the crankshaft. Rotate the hex nut on the tool in order to install the crankshaft balancer onto the crankshaft.

  4.  
  5. Remove the tool from the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and the bolt.
  8.  
  9. If installing the used crankshaft balancer bolt, tighten to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If installing the NEW crankshaft balancer bolt, , tighten to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm) plus an additional 130 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Install the torque converter covers.
  14.  
  15. Raise the frame to the original position.
  16.  
  17. Install and tighten the right and left side frame bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  18.  
  19. Install the right engine splash shield.
  20.  
  21. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Install the drive belt.
  26.  

3.6L Engine
  1. Install the engine support fixture.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine mount strut bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine mount.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter.
  8.  
  9. Install a flywheel holding tool through the starter mounting hole.
  10.  
  11. Using engine support fixture, lower engine approximately two inches.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  14.  
  15. Install a crankshaft button tool such as J 38416-2 in the nose of the crankshaft.
  16.  
  17. Install crankshaft balancer remover tool such as J 41816 in order to remove the crankshaft balancer.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the center bolt of the crankshaft balancer remover tool in order to pull the crankshaft balancer off of the crankshaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer remover tool from the crankshaft balancer.
  22.  

To install:


NOTE
The crankshaft balancer remover tool must be installed onto the flywheel.

  1. Use the tool , nut, bearing and washer to install the crankshaft balancer.
    NOTE
    Do not lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal or crankshaft balancer sealing surfaces. The crankshaft balancer is installed into a dry seal.

  3. Apply lubricant to the inside of the crankshaft balancer hub bore.
  4.  
  5. Place the crankshaft balancer in position on the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Thread the tool in the crankshaft. Ensure you engage at least 10 threads of the tool before pressing the crankshaft balancer in place.
  8.  
  9. Push the crankshaft balancer into position by tightening the nut on the tool until the large washer bottoms out on the crankshaft end.
  10.  
  11. Remove the.
  12.  
  13. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 150 degrees.
  14.  
  15. Remove the flywheel holding tool.
  16.  
  17. Install the starter.
  18.  
  19. Using engine support fixture, raise the engine into position.
  20.  
  21. Install the engine mount.
  22.  
  23. Install the engine mount strut bracket.
