Cylinder Head

Removal & Installation



3.5L Engine
Left Side
  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods.
  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left spark plugs.
    NOTE
    This component uses torque-to-yield bolts. When servicing this component do not reuse the bolts, New torque-to-yield bolts must be installed. Reusing used torque-to-yield bolts will not provide proper bolt torque and clamp load. Failure to install NEW torque-to-yield bolts may lead to engine damage.

  14.  
  15. Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cylinder head.
  18.  
  19. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cylinder head locator dowel pins, if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the cylinder head.
  24.  

To install:


NOTE
Head gaskets are specific for right hand and left hand applications, and also must be installed with the correct side facing up. Note the markings (1) on the head gaskets for proper installation. Failure to do so may lead to engine damage.

  1. Install the cylinder head locator dowel pins, if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the cylinder head locator dowel pins for proper installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the cylinder head gasket.
  6.  
  7. Install the cylinder head and bolts.
    NOTE
    This component uses torque-to-yield bolts. When servicing this component do not reuse the bolts, New torque-to-yield bolts must be installed. Reusing used torque-to-yield bolts will not provide proper bolt torque and clamp load. Failure to install NEW torque-to-yield bolts may lead to engine damage.

  9. Tighten the NEW cylinder head bolts using the following 2 steps:
    1. Step 1: in sequence to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: in sequence an additional 95 degrees.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Install the left spark plugs.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil level indicator tube.
  14.  
  15. Install the exhaust manifold.
  16.  
  17. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower intake manifold. Fill the engine with oil.
  20.  
  21. Inspect for leaks
  22.  

Right Side
  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve rocker arms and push rods.
  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right spark plugs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the alternator. Notice: This component uses torque-to-yield bolts. When servicing this component do not reuse the bolts, New torque-to-yield bolts must be installed. Reusing used torque-to-yield bolts will not provide proper bolt torque and clamp load. Failure to install NEW torque-to-yield bolts may lead to engine damage.
  14.  
  15. Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cylinder head.
  18.  
  19. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cylinder locator dowel pins, if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the cylinder head.
  24.

NOTE

  9. Tighten the NEW cylinder head bolts using the following 2 steps:
    1. Step 1: in sequence to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

  11. Install the alternator.
  12.  
  13. Install the right spark plugs.
  14.  
  15. Install the exhaust manifold.
  16.  
  17. Install the valve rocker arms and push rods.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower intake manifold.
  20.  
  21. Fill the engine with oil.
  22.  
  23. Inspect for leaks.
  24.  

3.6L Engine
Left Side
  1. Remove the left bank secondary timing chain.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil level indicator.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiring harness ground from the cylinder head.
  8.  
  9. Remove the catalytic converter.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two front M8 left cylinder head bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left cylinder head bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard the left cylinder head gasket.
  18.  
  19. Clean and inspect the cylinder head and the engine block sealing surfaces.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket.
  2.  
  3. Ensure the cylinder head locating pins are securely mounted in the cylinder block deck face.
  4.  
  5. Install a NEW left cylinder head gasket using the deck face locating pins for retention.
  6.  
  7. Align the left cylinder head with the deck face locating pins.
  8.  
  9. Place the left cylinder head in position on the deck face.
    NOTE
    DO NOT allow oil on the cylinder head bolt bosses or DO NOT reuse the old M11 cylinder head bolts.

  10.  
  11. Tighten the NEW M11 cylinder head bolts using the following 2 steps:
    1. Step 1: in sequence to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: in sequence an additional 120 degrees.
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Install the 2 front M8 left cylinder head bolts and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) plus an additional 60 degrees.
  14.  
  15. Install the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold. .
  16.  
  17. Connect the wiring harness electrical connector located at the side of the cylinder head.
  18.  
  19. Install the wiring harness ground to the cylinder head.
  20.  
  21. Install the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Install the oil level indicator.
  24.  
  25. Install the left bank secondary timing chain.
  26.  

Right Side
  1. Remove the hood.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right bank secondary timing chain.
  4.  
  5. With the aid of an assistant, remove the cylinder head with the exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
  8.  
  9. Clean and inspect the cylinder head and the engine block sealing surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket.
  2.  
  3. With the aid of an assistant, carefully install the cylinder head with the exhaust manifold to the engine. Ensure the cylinder head locating pins are securely mounted in the cylinder block deck face.
  4.  
  5. Install a NEW right cylinder head gasket using the deck face locating pins for retention.
  6.  
  7. Align the right cylinder head with the deck face locating pins.
  8.  
  9. Place the right cylinder head in position on the deck face.
    NOTE
    DO NOT allow oil on the cylinder head bolt bosses or DO NOT reuse the old M11 cylinder head bolts.

  10.  
  11. Tighten the NEW M11 cylinder head bolts using the following 2 steps:
    1. Step 1: in sequence to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: in sequence an additional 120 degrees.
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Install the right bank secondary timing chain.
  14.  
  15. Install the hood.
  16.
