Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission and flywheel.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the outside diameter of the crankshaft or chamber with any tool.

  2.  
  3. Pry out the crankshaft rear oil seal using a flat-bladed tool.
  4.

  1. Using a seal installer such as J 42067 , install a NEW crankshaft real oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the flywheel and transmission
  4.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission and flywheel.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the outside diameter of the crankshaft or chamber with any tool.

  2.  
  3. Pry out the crankshaft rear oil seal using a flat-bladed tool.
  4.

  1. Align the mandrel dowel pin to the dowel pin hole in the crankshaft
  2.  
  3. Using a large flat blade screwdriver, tighten the two mandrel screws to the crankshaft, ensuring the mandrel is snug to the crankshaft hub.
    NOTE
    The seal will only fit one way onto the mandrel, and if properly installed, will center on a step that protrudes from the center of the mandrel.

  5. Install the rear main seal, with the protective nylon sleeve attached, onto the mandrel.
  6.  
  7. Install the outer drive drum onto the mandrel.
  8.  
  9. Install the bearing, washer, and the drive nut onto the threaded shaft.
  10.  
  11. Using a wrench, turn the drive nut on the mandrel, which will push the seal into the engine block bore.
  12.  
  13. Turn the wrench until the drive drum is snug and flush against the engine block.
  14.  
  15. Loosen and remove the drive nut, washer, bearing and drive drum. Discard the nylon plastic seal protector.
  16.  
  17. Verify that the seal has seated properly.
  18.  
  19. Use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the two attachment screws from the mandrel and remove the mandrel from the crankshaft hub.
  20.  
  21. Install the flywheel and transmission
  22.  

3.6L Engine
  1. Remove the engine flywheel. Remove the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts.
  4.  
  5. Use the pry points located at the edge of the crankshaft rear oil seal housing to separate the RTV sealant
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.

To install:

  1. Using a guide pin set such as EN 46109, install the 0.236 in. (6mm) guides from the tool into the 2 crankshaft rear oil seal housing corner bolt holes of the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install crankshaft rear oil seal installation tool such as EN 47839 and handle onto the rear of the crankshaft flange.
  4.  
  5. Place a 0.118 in. (3mm) bead of RTV sealant to the NEW crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal housing to the engine block
  8.  
  9. Remove the guides from the block.
  10.  
  11. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts, tighten to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence illustrated.
  12.  
  13. Remove the guide pin set.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Install the engine flywheel.
