Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the tire and wheel.
    NOTE
    DO NOT re-use the lower ball joint bolt. Discard and use NEW only.

  2.  
  3. Remove the lower ball joint to knuckle nut and bolt.
  4.  
  5. Separate the lower control arm from the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. If removing the left lower control arm, remove the following:
    1. For vehicles equipped with the 4T45-E transmission, remove the left side transmission mount.
    2.  
    3. For vehicles equipped with the 6T70/6T75 transmission, remove the left side transmission mount.

  9. If removing the right lower control arm, remove the following:
    1. For vehicles equipped with the 3.5L engine, remove the right engine mount
    2.  
    3. For vehicles equipped with the 3.6L engine, remove the right engine mount.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the front lower control arm bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear lower control arm bushing nuts and bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower control arm from the cradle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower control arm in the cradle.
  2.  
  3. Install and hand tighten the rear lower control arm bushing nuts and bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install and hand tighten the front lower control arm bolt.
  6.  
  7. Install the ball joint to knuckle bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), reverse the nut 3 / 4 of a turn and retighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus an additional 30 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Load the front suspension with the proper jack stand before tightening the bolts to specifications.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the front lower control arm bolt. Tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the rear bushing to frame bolts. Tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  14.  
  15. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  16.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Turn the knuckle assembly to left.
  6.  
  7. Using a Allen wrench and the proper size wrench, remove the lower ball joint retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Using the ball joint separator remove the lower ball joint from the control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tool from the lower ball joint.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front control arm mounting nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Position the lower control arm in the front bushing and the rear mounting bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install and hand tighten the rear lower control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Install the front lower control arm nut. Tighten to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower ball joint in the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the ball joint mounting nut.
  10.  
  11. Using an Allen wrench with the proper size wrench, tighten the mounting nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) plus an additional 120 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the support and lower the vehicle
  16.
