Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the stabilizer shaft.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable jack stand, support the rear of the frame assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the frame support to body bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear frame assembly mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Lower the rear of the cradle in order to gain clearance to the stabilizer shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stabilizer bar clamps and insulators.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer shaft through the opening between the frame and body.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Position the stabilizer shaft to the frame.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar clamps and insulators. Tighten the clamps and bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Raise the rear of the cradle and install the cradle bolts. Tighten the rear frame bolts. Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) , plus an additional 180 degrees.
  6.  
  7. Remove the jack stand.
  8.  
  9. Connect the stabilizer link to the stabilizer bar. Tighten the link nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front tires and wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt from the intermediate shaft bracket to the front cradle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear propeller shaft, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer shaft links at the stabilizer bar.
  12.  
  13. Position adjustable jack stand underneath the left and right side at the rear of the front cradle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left and right frame reinforcement mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the front frame reinforcement mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the front frame mounting bolts.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the rear frame mounting bolts.
  22.  
  23. Lower the frame from the frame rail until enough clearance is gained to remove the stabilizer shaft.
    NOTE
    If replacing the stabilizer shaft, use NEW insulators.

  25. Remove both left and right stabilizer shaft insulators.
    NOTE
    It maybe necessary to maneuver the stabilizer shaft in such a way to remove it from the front cradle.

  27. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Position the stabilizer shaft on the frame.
  2.  
  3. Install the left and right stabilizer shaft insulators and brackets.
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft.
  6.  
  7. Using the jack stands, raise the front cradle into position.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the front frame bolts.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the frame to body bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the front frame reinforcement mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the rear frame mounting bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the rear reinforcement bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Remove the adjustable jack stands.
  20.  
  21. Install the bolt from the intermediate shaft bracket to the front cradle.
  22.  
  23. Install the outer tie rod ends to the knuckle. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 120 degrees.
  24.  
  25. Install the rear propeller shaft, if equipped.
  26.  
  27. Install the front tires and wheels.
  28.  
  29. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  30.
