NOTE
Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the steering column, intermediate shaft or steering gear. After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

  1. Turn the front wheels to the straight forward position and secure the steering wheel from moving. Remove as much power steering fluid from the remote power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  2.  
  3. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  4.  
  5. Disengage the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  6.  
  7. Remove the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt at the steering gear and discard it.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the rear transmission mount bracket bolt.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector and unclip it from the rear transmission mount bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 3 transmission rear mount bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 3 rear transmission mount bracket nuts.
  18.  
  19. Position the transmission rear mount and bracket aside.
  20.  
  21. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose bolt and disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose from the steering gear.
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering gear outlet hose retainer from the right side rear of the frame.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers from the steering gear.
    NOTE
    The position of the steering gear will need to be manipulated to remove it through the left front wheel opening.

  27. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers from the steering gear.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Start all of the bolts and nuts by hand before finalizing any torques.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers to the steering gear. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the power steering gear outlet hose retainer to the right side rear of the frame.
  8.  
  9. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose to the steering gear and install the power steering gear inlet hose bolt. Tighten the bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the 3 rear transmission mount bracket nuts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the 3 transmission rear mount bolts. Tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the (HO2S) electrical connector and clip it to the rear transmission mount bracket.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the rear transmission mount bracket bolt. Tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  20.  
  21. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column. Install a NEW bolt and tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) for models with electronic steering or 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm) for models with hydraulic steering.
  22.  
  23. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Tighten a new bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  26.  
  27. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  28.  
  29. Adjust the front toe.
  30.

NOTE

  11. Remove the steering gear heat shield from the steering gear.

  13. Remove the transmission brace bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transmission rear mount bolt and position the transmission brace aside.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the rear transmission mount bracket bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 2 remaining transmission rear mount bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 3 rear transmission mount bracket nuts.
  22.  
  23. Position the transmission rear mount and bracket aside.
  24.  
  25. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose bolt and disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose from the steering gear.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers from the steering gear.
    NOTE
    The position of the steering gear will need to be manipulated to remove it through the left front wheel opening.

  29. Remove the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Start all of the bolts and nuts by hand before finalizing any torques.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers to the steering gear. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose to the steering gear and install the power steering gear inlet hose bolt. Tighten the bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rear transmission mount bracket nuts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the transmission rear mount bolts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the rear transmission brace bolts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  16.  
  17. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column. Install a NEW bolt and tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) for models with electronic steering or 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm) for models with hydraulic steering.
  18.  
  19. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Tighten a new bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  22.  
  23. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  24.  
  25. Adjust the front toe.

NOTE

The steering column
 
The intermediate shaft
 
The steering gear
 


NOTE
After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

  1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the remote power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links at the stabilizer shaft.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear propeller shaft, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the underbody rear side rails.
  12.  
  13. Remove the frame brace.
  14.  
  15. Remove the right side catalytic converter.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering gear heat shields.
  18.  
  19. Position adjustable jack stands underneath the left and right sides of the vehicle at the rear of the front frame.
  20.  
  21. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  22.  
  23. Remove the left and right front frame reinforcement mounting bolts.
  24.  
  25. Loosen the front frame reinforcement mounting bolts.
  26.  
  27. Loosen the front frame mounting bolts.
  28.  
  29. Loosen the rear front frame mounting bolts.
  30.  
  31. Lower the frame from the frame rail until enough clearance is gained to remove the steering gear.
  32.  
  33. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose retaining plate bolt and the power steering gear inlet and outlet pipe clip bolt.
  34.  
  35. Pull the power steering gear inlet and outlet hoses out of the steering gear and power steering gear inlet and outlet pipe clip.
  36.  
  37. Remove the left side steering gear nuts and bolts. Remove the right side steering gear bolts (1). Remove the steering gear from the vehicle through the driver side of the vehicle.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear to the vehicle through the driver's side.
    NOTE
    Start all bolts by hand before finalizing any torques.

  3. Install the right side steering gear bolts. Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the left side steering gear nuts and bolts. Tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet hoses to the steering gear.
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering gear inlet hose retaining plate bolt and the power steering gear inlet and outlet pipe clip bolt.
  10.  
  11. Raise the front frame to the vehicle body leaving approximately a half inch gap.
  12.  
  13. Install the left and right front frame reinforcement mounting bolts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the rear front frame mounting bolts. Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the front frame mounting bolts. Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the front frame reinforcement mounting bolts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Remove the adjustable jack stands from underneath the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  24.  
  25. Install the underbody rear side rails.
  26.  
  27. Install the rear propeller shaft, if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Install the steering gear heat shields.
  30.  
  31. Install the right side catalytic converter.
  32.  
  33. Install the frame brace.
  34.  
  35. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Tighten the retainers to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Connect the stabilizer shaft links at the stabilizer shaft.
  38.  
  39. Connect the steering linkage outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
  40.  
  41. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  42.  
  43. Adjust the front toe.
  44.
