Removal & Installation

  1. Empty the master cylinder reservoir until it is half full.
  2.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.
  7. Install a large C-clamp over the body of the brake caliper with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against the outer brake pad.
    NOTE
When using a large C-clamp to compress a caliper piston into a caliper bore of a caliper equipped with an integral park brake mechanism, do not exceed more than 0.039 in. (1mm) of piston travel. Exceeding this amount of piston travel will cause damage to the internal adjusting mechanism and/or the integral park brake mechanism.

  8.
  9. Tighten the C-clamp until the caliper piston is compressed into the caliper bore enough to allow the caliper to slide past the brake rotor.
  10.
  11. Do not exceed 0.039 in. (1mm) of caliper piston travel.
  12.
  13. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.
  14.
  15. Remove the brake hose to caliper bolt from the brake caliper.
  16.
  17. Remove the brake hose from the brake caliper.
  18.
  19. Remove and discard the 2 copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.
  20.
  21. Cap or plug the opening in the brake caliper and the brake hose to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  22.
  23. Remove the 2 brake caliper pin bolts.
  24.
  25. Remove the park brake cable from the caliper.
  26.
  27. Remove the brake caliper from the brake caliper bracket.
  28.

To install:

  1. Inspect the caliper slide boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration.
  2.
  3. Install the brake caliper to the brake caliper bracket. Tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the park brake cable to the caliper.
  6.
  7. Remove the caps or plugs from the brake caliper opening and the brake hose.
    NOTE
DO NOT reuse the copper brake hose gaskets.

  8.
  9. Install NEW copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and to the brake hose.
  10.
  11. Install the brake hose and the brake hose-to-caliper bolt to the brake caliper. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.
  13. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately  2 / 3 of its travel distance.
  14.
  15. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  16.
  17. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat the last 2 steps until a firm brake pedal is obtained
  18.
  19. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level.
  20.

  1. Empty the master cylinder reservoir until it is half full.
  2.

  22.
  23. Remove the park brake cable from the caliper.
  24.
  25. Remove the brake caliper from the brake caliper bracket.
  26.

To install:

  1. Inspect the caliper slide boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration.
  2.
  3. Install the brake caliper to the brake caliper bracket. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  4.

Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  12.
  13. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately  2 / 3 of its travel distance.
