  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Make sure the wheels of the vehicle must are in the straight ahead position and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  3. Lock the steering column by installing tool J 42640 into the underside of the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Range selector cable from the range selector lever
     
    Range selector cable with bracket from the transmission case and set aside
     
    Nut and bolt from the AIR pipe
     
    Bolt from the AIR pipe
     
    Ground cable bolt from the transaxle
     
    Transaxle electrical connector
     
    Wiring harness from the wiring harness retainer on the transaxle
     

  6.  
  7. Install the engine support fixture.

    Upper engine-to-transaxle case bolts
     
    Front wheels
     
    Both of the left fascia extensions
     
    Front air deflector
     
    Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt
     
    Intermediate shaft from the power steering gear
     
    Power steering gear heat shied
     
    Power steering gear mounting bolts
     
    Power steering line retainers from the frame
     

  8.  
  9. Secure the power steering gear to the exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the two mounting nuts in order to allow removal of the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) from the bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake line retainers from the frame
     
    Left transaxle mount
     
    Frame
     
    Right and left drive axles from the transaxle
     
    Transmission oil cooler hoses from the transaxle
     
    Transaxle fluid filler tube
     
    Torque converter cover
     
    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts

  15. Support transaxle using an appropriate transaxle jack.

    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector
     
    Transaxle brace-to-transaxle bolts
     
    Transaxle brace-to-engine bolts
     
    Transaxle brace
     
    Engine-to-transaxle case bolt which can be accessed through the right wheel opening
     
    Remaining transaxle-to-engine bolt
     
    Transaxle from vehicle using an appropriate transaxle jack
     
    Rear transaxle bracket from the transaxle
     
    Left transaxle bracket from the transaxle

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, please note the following specifications:

    Left transaxle bracket bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Rear transaxle bracket bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm)
     
    Lower transaxle bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Transaxle brace-to-engine bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Transaxle brace-to-transaxle bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm)
     
    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm)
     
    Power steering gear mounting bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
     
    Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Upper transaxle case-to-engine bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Bolt to AIR pipe to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check and adjust the transmission fluid level.
  4.  
  5. Check the front end alignment.
  6.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake duct
     
    Range selector cable from the transmission
     
    Upper transmission oil cooler line from the radiator
     
    Lower transmission oil cooler line from the transmission
     
    Both heater tube retainers from the upper case side cover
     
    Coolant temperature sensor electrical connector
     
    Ground wire at the rear of the transmission
     
    Left front Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) electrical connector
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) from the transmission
     
    Rack and pinion electrical connector
     
    Transmission vent hose
     
    Upper transmission bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Install an engine support fixture.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Vacuum reservoir
     
    Ball joints from the steering knuckles
     
    Antilock Brake System (ABS) module
     
    Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pumps
     
    Left and right splash shields
     
    Air deflector
     
    Power steering line brackets at the frame
     
    Front and rear transmission mount nuts
     
    Rack and pinion from the frame
     

  8.  
  9. Support the engine frame.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 6 frame bolts and lower the frame from the body.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Left and right halfshafts
     
    Exhaust heat shield
     
    Transmission-to-engine brace
     
    Front engine-to-transmission pencil brace
     
    Three ground connections at the front of the transmission
     
    Transmission main wiring harness
     
    Engine to transmission bracket
     
    Flexplate cover
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Right transmission bracket

  15. Support the transmission.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower transmission bolts and lower the transmission towards the left so it can clear the starter motor.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Torque the transmission-to-engine bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Right transmission bracket. Torque the bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Torque converter bolts. Torque the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
     
    Flexplate cover. Torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Transmission brace to the engine. Torque the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Transmission main wiring harness
     
    Three ground connections to the transmission
     
    Front engine-to-transmission pencil brace
     
    Engine-to-transmission bracket
     
    Exhaust heat shield
     
    Left and right halfshafts
     
    Engine frame. Torque the bolts to 142 ft. lbs. (192 Nm).

  3. Remove the frame support fixture.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rack and pinion. Torque the bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Front and rear transmission mounts. Torque the nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Power steering line brackets. Torque the bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Air deflector
     
    Left and right splash shields
     
    AIR pumps
     
    ABS module
     
    Lower ball joints
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Vacuum reservoir
     
    Upper transmission bolts. Torque the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Transmission vent hose
     
    Rack and pinion electrical connector
     
    VSS to the transmission
     
    WSS electrical connector
     
    Ground wire at the rear of the transmission
     
    Coolant temperature sensor electrical connector
     
    Both heater tube retainers from the upper case side cover
     
    Lower transmission oil cooler line
     
    Upper transmission oil cooler line
     
    Range selector cable and bracket
     
    Air intake duct
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Check and adjust the transmission fluid level.
  12.  
  13. Check the front end alignment.
