Removal & Installation



3.5L & 4.0L Engines with a Cartridge Type Seal
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine and transmission assembly
     
    Transmission from the engine
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the seal as follows:
    1. Place Seal Removal tool J-42841 onto the crankshaft.
    2.  
    3. Install 8, 1-inch self starting screws through the guide holes of the tool and into the seal. A variable speed drill will be helpful for installing the screws.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the center screw of the tool to remove the seal.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Clean out the drain at the bottom of the seal bore with a piece of wire or pipe cleaner.

To install:

  1. Apply a small amount of RTV gasket maker at the crankcase split line across the end of the upper and lower crankcase seal.
  2.  
  3. Coat the outer diameter of the rear crankshaft seal area with engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Wipe the outer diameter of the crankshaft flexplate flange with a lint-free cloth.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate the outer rubber surface of the seal with clean engine oil. DO NOT apply any oil to the green coating, pre-applied to the inner diameter of the seal.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the center bolt of the seal installer until the center hub protrudes about 1 / 2 inch past the outer plate.
  10.  
  11. Thread the 3 mounting bolts into the crankshaft flange until the tool is firmly mounted on the crankshaft.
  12.  
  13. Install the seal by tightening the center bolt until the tool bottoms against the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the tool and verify that the seal is installed evenly.
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Flexplate. Torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm); then an additional 50 degree turn.
     
    Transmission to the engine
     
    Engine and transmission assembly

4.0L Engine
with a Lip Type Seal
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Carefully pry the oil seal from the housing using a suitable prying tool, taking care not to damage the housing or the crankshaft sealing surface.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Place a small amount of GM Gasket Maker® at the top of the crankcase split line across the end of the upper and lower crankcase seal.
  2.  
  3. Apply clean engine oil to the inside and outside diameter of the oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    New seal
     
    Flexplate
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.
