Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are not a serviceable component and if found to be defective the control arm assembly must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Assemble the bushing tools as follows:
    1. Assemble the Puller Bolt/Thrust Bearing tool J-21474-19 through the Bushing Receiver tool J-14014-2 over the bushing against the control arm.
    2.  
    3. Lubricate the bolt threads with high pressure lubricant.
    4.  
    5. Install the Bushing tool J-22222-2 (with the small end facing the bushing) and the Long Nut J-21474-18 onto the Puller Bolt/Thrust Bearing tool J-21474-19.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Tighten the Long Nut J-21474-18 until the bushing is pressed from the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bushing tools.

To install:

  1. Start the bushing onto the control arm.
    NOTE
    Position the bushing flat vertical and rearward.

  2.  
  3. Assemble the bushing tools as follows:
    1. Position the Puller Bolt/Thrust Bearing tool J-21474-19 through the Bushing Receiver tool J-14014-2 over the bushing against the control arm.
    2.  
    3. Lubricate the bolt threads with high pressure lubricant.
    4.  
    5. Install the Bushing Installer tool J-28685 (large end facing the bushing) and Long Nut J-21474-18 onto the Puller Bolt/Thrust Bearing tool J-21474-19.
    6.

  5. Tighten the Puller Bolt/Thrust Bearing tool J-21474-19 until the bushing is fully seated in the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tools.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the front wheel.
  12.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Take note of the positions of the washers and insulators for installation purposes.


    WARNING
    Be careful not to overextend the halfshaft tri-pod joint.



    Front wheel
     
    Sway bar link kit
     



    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     



    Lower control arm-to-engine frame nuts and bolts

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If necessary, tighten the castle nut up to an additional 60 degree ( 1 / 6 ) turn to align the cotter pin holes. NEVER loosen the nut to make the alignment.



    Lower control arm, do not tighten the nuts and bolts
     
    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Torque the castle nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     



    Sway bar link kit. Torque the nut to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
     
    Front wheel. Torque the nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle in order to achieve proper trim height.
  4.  
  5. On all except Aurora, torque the lower control arm-to-frame rear bolt to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm) and the lower control arm-to-frame front nut to 93 ft. lbs. (126 Nm).
  6.  
  7. On Aurora, torque the lower control arm-to-frame rear bolt to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm) and the lower control arm-to-frame front nut to 117 ft. lbs. (158 Nm).
