Steering Knuckle


Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    Always turn the ignition OFF when connecting or disconnecting battery cables, battery chargers, or jumper cables. Failing to do so may damage the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or other electronic components.

    The battery is located beneath the rear seat cushion.

  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel

  9. Insert drift of screwdriver into the caliper and rotor in order to prevent rotor from turning.

    Drive axle nut
    Brake rotor
    Wheel bearing and hub from the vehicle
    Outer tie rod retaining nut
    Front strut to steering knuckle retaining bolts
    Lower ball joint cotter pin and nut
    Steering knuckle from the vehicle


To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed 60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment.

    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) plus 180°
    New cotter pin

    Tie rod to the knuckle and tighten the nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus 180°
    Wheel bearing/hub
    Brake rotor
    Drive axle and tighten the nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm)
    Wheel and tire

  3. Reconnect the negative battery cable and reinstall the rear seat cushion.
