Fuel Pressure Regulator

Removal & Installation



3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
    NOTE
    Always turn the ignition OFF when connecting or disconnecting battery cables, battery chargers, or jumper cables. Failing to do so may damage the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or other electronic components.


    NOTE
    The battery is located beneath the rear seat cushion.

  5. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  6.  
  7. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line
     
    Fuel pressure regulator retainer clip
     

  10.  
  11. Pull and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the regulator from the fuel rail.
    1. Use a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel.

      Regulator lower O-ring
       
      Filter
       
      Regulator upper O-ring
       
      Back-up ring

  13. Cover the fuel pressure regulator housing in order to prevent contaminants from entering the fuel system.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use compressed air in order to test or clean a fuel pressure regulator as damage to the fuel pressure regulator may result.


WARNING
Do not immerse the fuel pressure regulator in a solvent bath in order to prevent damage to the fuel pressure regulator.

  1. Clean the fuel pressure regulator filter screen with gasoline if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator if a new regulator is not being installed. Lubricate the O-rings lightly with clean engine oil.
     
    Back-up ring
     
    Upper O-ring
     
    Filter
     
    Lower O-ring
     
    Fuel pressure regulator into the fuel rail
     
    Fuel pressure regulator retainer clip
     
    Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line
     

  4.  
  5. Reconnect the negative battery cable and reinstall the rear seat cushion.
  6.  
  7. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  8.  
  9. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
  10.  
  11. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
  12.  
  13. Turn ON the ignition.
  14.  
  15. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  16.  
  17. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  18.  

4.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.

  5. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  6.  
  7. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line
     
    Fuel pressure regulator retainer clip
     

  10.  
  11. Lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the regulator from the fuel rail.
    1. Use a shop towel in order to catch any spilled fuel.

      Regulator seal lower O-ring
       
      Regulator assembly filter
       
      Regulator seal upper O-ring
       
      Regulator seal back-up ring

  13. Cover the fuel pressure regulator housing in order to prevent contaminates from entering the fuel system.

To install:

  1. Install new O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator if a new regulator is not being installed. Lubricate the O-rings lightly with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Back-up ring
     
    Upper O-ring
     
    Filter
     
    Lower O-ring
     
    Fuel pressure regulator retainer clip
     
    Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line
     

  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Inspect for fuel leaks using the following procedure:
    1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    4.  
    5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  10.  
  11. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  12.
